[website] major upgrades of wiki / forum

Post by abma »

as you can see i've activated the pending changes on springrts.com. A lot of thanks to AF, Forboding Angel and gajop who did most of the changes!

Due to the upgrades the existing styles weren't incompatible and we had to make a new layout.

now the forum now has a responsive style and the wiki basicly is reset to the default layout.

Very likely we will adjust it over the time to make it better usable.

Two plugins were added to the forum: postlove and codebox:

postlove allows to like a post and codebox allows syntax-highlighting quotes in forum.

mediawiki was upgraded to 1.23.14 and phpbb to 3.1.9.

Please report bugs / problems to mantis (select Project "Site")!

Oh this was kinda unexpected. I hope everything works as I contributed those two plugins but I don't have time to address any issues (like the ajax error that sometimes pops with postlove) right now.

Hopefully nothing major is broken.

RIP

Last layout switch caused a lot of users to leave the website, now it will die completely ...

It was added ~half a year ago, so i didn't expect the activation to be unexpected :-P. Let's see, for now it seems to work fine.

Parts of the wiki have quite badly screwed colours - https://springrts.com/wiki/Lua:Callins for example.

The wiki is missing its global nav bar, instead it has a small menu on the LHS, which is rather unsightly. An unsuspecting user clicking on 'games' will likely be confused.

Also the wiki should not be called documentation because it mostly isn't.

Parts of the forum are still sky blue e.g. try editing a post. But in general I have no strong feelings about the new forum look, seems just average and non objectionable.

Showing/hidihg online status while browsing the forum appears to be broken, although I don't have a second machine to fully check on.

Did the wiki gain any functionality?

I may be in the minority, but I find this layout way to bright for me(in terms of whiteness). Perhaps turn in down a notch?

Most of the better pages use templates so should be easy to get a more sympathetic colour scheme.

How is it not documentation?

Syntax highlighting is part of more modern mediawiki installs so, yes.

I just expected you'd tell me before you update so I could react to additional testing before/after deployment and any emergency patches you may need. It's not a biggie, I was just surprised.

I'm not necessarily completely pessimistic or ready to yell DOOM like jk, but I think there are some major issues we need to address. Besides those mentioned (img one seems major!), I've noticed "quick links" doesn't have the icon shown until you click on it. This is especially problematic on the phone where you don't even have the "Quick links" text next to it, so you have to go by memory.

The other issue is that it flickers heavily on my phone, often not showing anything until I scroll. This obviously needs more testing but it's certainly a new bug.

If I had a choice on theme/color I would like to go for a darker one as well like Super Mario does.

PS: Postlove seems to have lost all upvotes since yesterday (there were at least 4 for your post). Did they reset when you edited it or is this a bug?

This should be a major thing, but it doesn't seem it's installed (https://springrts.com/wiki/Special:Version).
It appears the extension we need is called SyntaxHighlight (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extensio ... xHighlight), which should come with the our media wiki, but might just need enabling.

Oh, hopefully you can still do it. It's a very important feature imo.

I'd love to see syntax highlighting too.
How is it not documentation?
Some of it is, but we also have tutorials, banks of external links, image galleries, faq, etc.

mediawiki was upgraded to 1.23.14
This is not the latest version, latest is 1.26.3. If we have to lose all the style of the old wiki, lets at least get up to being current. Doing so will make adding syntax highlighting easier.

Before the bitching rolls in, please understand that all of the changes that I made to phpbb are easy to revert back to the previous by simply commenting out a single line.

If you use an adblocker and prefer the previous, you could simply block materialish.css

There are a few things I hadn't finished yet (nothing major), like parts of the UI when making a post or the userCP are still blue. They will get updated over time.

You missed
This extension is bundled with MediaWiki 1.21 and above. Thus you do not have to download it again.

No, it's not compatible with newer versions. Or do you mean the templates?

Additionally, the old wiki fixed width caused lua pages to be badly formatted with unintentional wrapping. I hated that crap.

There is a bootstrap theme that we had been working with that was fully mobile compliant, but for now it's just the default (which is a massive improvement).
