They work fine in Volcanic Basin. Maybe check the cegs in VB and compare any differences to the maps you've been testing.

Do your test maps have gamedata/resources.lua?

They don't appear to be working fine at all.

Do your test maps have gamedata/resources.lua?
All lavamaps I've tested have resources_map.lua, including the one Forb mentioned.

VB uses resources_map.lua

And it works fine. If you are getting squares, those are usually caused by a screwed up sprite in your bitmaps.
