Guidelines for feature requests

Post by jcnossen »

Just for clarity, this new feature request forum is not intented to stimulate spamming every little thing you can think of into a thread. Please put some thought into why it would be useful to request or implement this.

- don't post mod feature requests, those should go in the mods forum

- don't put up requests for a particular implementation of an idea if you aren't a game programmer.

- before posting you should check the MTR and ofcourse this forum to see if your idea isn't already posted.

they should also be realistic.

Just you put a lot of thought into a new renderer designed for supercomputrs doesnt mean you should post it

perhaps we should start collating similar requests together?
for example, shield related stuff could go into a shields thread. the poster could then collate all the different requests into an easy list.
i'm happy to kick off a shield one, just post in it and i'll add the request to the first post

Maybe we can make a wiki page for an organised "approved feature requests"... set up some kind of "not everyone told the requester to shut up and stop ruining things" system for approval... something similar to the MTR but for ideas we all acctually like... organised into "just change a variable" to "rework the entire codebase" spectrum... that or we could start graduating things from the feature request forum to the mantis.

how about adding them to mantis?

Aside from that make sure measures are taken so it isnt a glorified block of text several hundred pages long

hmm, that's an idea, trouble is it can only be done by peeps who already know their way around the source code as they're the folks who'll know how 'tricky' the patch will be.
caydr will want a bounty section too

What exactly should go in this forum (or Help and Bugs for that matter), and what should go on Mantis?

Your requests for features should go here, your patches to implement those features should go on mantis. Help and Bugs should really just be "help" or a fairly non-technical discussion of bugs and workarounds. Confirmed bugs (i.e. you know how to reproduce it) should always go on Mantis, as well as your patches to fix those bugs.

I like this rule but not many people follow it :P

Could we put up suggestions of implementations we think seem good and have it explained(or linnked to an explaination of) why it is not a good idea in the interests of learning and that someone may fluke onto an idea?

Well it's not really a rez, but... what? Hmm, it does seem likely to be a bot by the sig, but it's not spamming any links.
