Secondly, until then it works using jaunty in the deb line (Yes, I know it's bad practise, but who cares as long as it works? )

I have spring .84 installed in Karmic and I've put the Jaunty .deb lines in the repository but synaptic keeps asking for a bunch of libboost files to install the upgrade. Anyone have any success in overcoming this?

Where does one get those libs? Are they in Ubuntu Backports repository? I can't find them in Synaptic.

Try marking spring for upgrade in synaptic, does it actually give an error?
