New lead

Post by Tobi »

Recently Yeha indicated that he doesn't have time to be the Spring lead developer anymore. I'd like to thank him for his work as lead on especially the 0.74 release series. He asked me whether I'd like to take over, which I initially refused because of lack of time.

I've been closely involved with many Spring things that Spring leads have done since the 0.70 release however and in practice I'll probably be doing the next few releases anyway, so it seems a bit more transparent if I officially become lead developer. ;-)

Is Yeha still involved in a lesser position, or is he taking a break for the foreseeable future?

looks like it's time to attract new devs, for if Tobi disappears, only trepan remains.. we're short of at least 3 dedicated devs, IMO

So, how does that work? Attracting new devs?

Giving the Linux side of spring as much polish as the windows side (lobby, installer maybe) should be the quickest route to getting free developers. Linux gaming is still quite the wasteland and i see much attention, praise and eventually contributions going to projects that are much behind spring in implementation and fun. Spring seems somewhat unknown and when its known, its always as an OTA-related project.

Yeah, I'm a Linux user. Spring on Linux is fine, just the Lua doesn't fully work, but i think that has been fixed for next version (tobi should know). The only thing missing is a stable and fully functional lobby, but it is getting there.

Linux, as you likely know, is pretty game starved, with a few notable exceptions. I would imagine that once a working lobby reaches the required feature set Linux interest should grow considerably as there is nothing like spring in terms of an RTS that I have seen. The Linux community shouldn't be underestimated

LuaUI was developed on linux, it "fully works" there.
The only problem is that you need to move the LuaUI/
directory into your $SPRING directory instead of trying
to access it via VFS (and yes, I have made the VFS
access automatic for the next release).

Ah good luck Tobi. We root for you.

And yes. we need to attract more devs. But I assume not every random good programmer can just step in. since the code isn't very 'open' to people who didn't spend time getting to learn it.

Was yeha the last of the original SY's contributing on a regular basis?

tbh Yeha contributed stuff on request every few weeks for the most part, if he wasnt an SY, tobi would probably have been picked anyway. But atm project lead status concerns release dcisions mostly.
