XTA beginner: need review of my 1v1 game
I recently played an XTA game against my brother.
With beginner I mean that I lose in most online games but win in most AI games(even E323).
I want to get better at XTA, so it would be cool if anyone could look at the replay and give me some feedback.
It's a relative short game on cooper hill with only level 1 stuff.
It was played just before 0.81.2, so I hope you have an old version laying around.

I'm afraid you wont get much help because of this requirementfliebel wrote:It was played just before 0.81.2, so I hope you have an old version laying around.
Re: XTA beginner: need review of my 1v1 game
also, it is recommended you spectate some battles online, and then play with others. try to find other newbs, if you cant, play with whom is around. listen to helpful tips, ask for help, and ignore the rest.
Re: XTA beginner: need review of my 1v1 game
In the old TA days the secret to learning was to watch replays... other option would be to play another game online with the latest engine, record and upload that replay and repeat the request... (though as I have no intention of giving you suggestions [haven't played XTA seriously ever... haven't really played an RTS seriously since Total Annihilation itself])
Re: XTA beginner: need review of my 1v1 game
I dled it and tried watching and then realised it's on the old verison of spring, sorry.
But if you type /j #xta in your lobby you'll join the XTA channel and find people there who'll help you.
There are guides if you wanna read briefly how to improve:
http://springrts.com/wiki/New_to_xta
http://springrts.com/wiki/Xta_units - Not completed, missing some Core units
http://springrts.com/wiki/Xta_commander

Re: XTA beginner: need review of my 1v1 game
Thanks for the replies, I'll try and get another game.
Is there any strategy in finding good games? Especially newbie ones with XTA.
I can play against my brothers, but most of the time they want to beat AIs together, they fear me, especially on Cooper Hill.
I read those wiki pages, nothing really new for me I'm afraid. I really like the com walk dragon teeth strategy though.

Re: XTA beginner: need review of my 1v1 game
Somebody make a cool download which features all Spring versions to date and automatically runs Spring through the separate .exe's depending upon the replay version!

and why dont you ask you brother what he did?
Re: XTA beginner: need review of my 1v1 game
Lol. You have no idea how many people that strat has annoyed/scared.fliebel wrote:I read those wiki pages, nothing really new for me I'm afraid. I really like the com walk dragon teeth strategy though.
And I think he means he plays his brothers and beats them...Also, merely rushing is not the way to win XTA, what do you do once they D gun your unit?

Re: XTA beginner: need review of my 1v1 game
my current best xta strat for ffas. Start core, make 1 mex, 1 solar, 1 wind (or second solar), upgrade com, walk to middle of map/to enemy while making mexes and storages (1 metal and maybe a few energy stores for cloaking). When you find a com pushing, goad him into dgun range by making an llt right in front of him that he will likely dgun. Then dgun him so he is at the very edge of your dgun. Your com will bounce back a bit but survive. Then you have crippled your enemy and have xp to upgrade. Now upgrade com, go air, make fink and and atlas, drop into enemy base and laser/dgun everything. When you are done with that base, upgrade again (next upgrade takes only 30 seconds), go t2 air (you arent making many units in this strat so you should have plenty of metal esp with reclaim if you laser stuff), and use t2 trans + gunships and enter next base. Repeat until you win. Immediately upload the replay and spam #main and #xta with "I AM T3H BEST ZOMGLOLOLLOLOL" until everyone hates you.

Re: XTA beginner: need review of my 1v1 game
I played a new game, this time an online one with 0.81.2.
I lost, but I'd like to hear your comments anyway.

@Tribulex
Your game is also 0.81.1 but the strategy sounds interesting.
@SirArtturi
I read the XTA basics one, are there more XTA guides?

Re: XTA beginner: need review of my 1v1 game
the first attack with the (whats the name, zipper?) raider bot was ok, would have been better if the winds had died.
starting buildorder could have been better imo, for example why reclaim a rock so early on if you still have enough starting m? the earlier you make a constructor to suck up rocks, the better your eco will be.
if the commander is assisting the factory, put him in a place where he can dgun without hitting own stuff.
com can also fire laser while using nano if in a good position.
do not use the commander to eat rocks and make solars at the edge of the map, use constructors for that. commander should be at front.
the missle bots were useless vs the peewees, too close.
if you do not play aggressive with the commander, make more con units to assist the factory so you can produce more units than your enemy.
for a beginner it wasnt too bad though i guess

Well, it takes alot of practice, and seems to piss people off, but i play spring like an rpg, and the commander is my avatar/player, so yeah....fliebel wrote: @Tribulex

Only if he has a build order. That is he will only fire if the command id of is negative. I consider this a bug, firing while nanoing behaviour should be decided by a unit's script.com can also fire laser while using nano if in a good position.

Re: XTA beginner: need review of my 1v1 game
Main points for improvement:
Reclaim more. You are surrounded in rocks on that map send an early con just to reclaim these and use com to assist lab. Later game you were surrounded in wrecks and still wasting time building mexes.
Dont waste too much time on the rush. On that map starting points are very compact so no half-decent player will really be bothered by it. Time would have been better spent expanding your base.
Unit selection. On such a high metal map you care less if your units die attacking so you should be making pretty much just pw/ak and maybe some rocko/storm if the game lasts long. Your aim is to use these units to keep the enemy stuck to the starting middle 3-4 mexes and kill any expansion either side.

Re: XTA beginner: need review of my 1v1 game
briefly
In my opinion you should have made all 3 mex close to you before the lab, and a solar if you intend to zipper rush
I'd also try keep your cons moving when you're raiding not idling (heavily suggest putting factory guard on, press f11 shoudld find it)
And hammers weren't a good choice, they need support and seeing as your commander was tied up you should have made an llt/peewees to ward off raiders
