Spring RTS Engine

Apparently at the next server rollout everyone will have to pick a username where they can add and subtract tags with /nick but never actually rename again. I haven't seen any discussion about it, and I'm somewhat upset with the change, so I thought I might as well make a topic about it.

Its a good idea. I have wanted and have asked for this type of tag system for a while. Odd that there hasn't been any discussion about it until now.

Do you have to rename now and then your name will be stuck in stone, or do you get a 1-time chance to pick this name even after the rollout?

I really like this. You will really have to stand by your reputation. The only valid use of renaming, IMO, is for clan tags. But this is better served by the afformentioned tagging system. Also, would be a big plus if only clan leader can grant someone a clan tag. More official this way.

Does this also means we are moving to toward and friends and clan system?

I think that indroducing a unique ID for each account would be better:
When a user create an account, he receives this unique ID from the server. When a user rename an account, the unique ID associated to the account does not change. So we are still free to change name as we want, but each account can be followed up by servers and other clients through the unique ID.

Then, a ban feature based on this unique ID could be implemented in lobby clients. This would force banned players to create new accounts if they want to join a battle from which they are banned, not just renaming their account. Thus, they would have the noob rank on these new accounts, and could be detected more easily.

pfff I rename like every day, sure reputation bla bla clan bla bla, but! being able to play without people having any prejudice towards you is much better than all of that crap.

But how will i stay a one-stripe forever then?

You get one chance when you renew your account. For example I will take the name LordMatt with the nick [LCC]LordMatt.

Repeatedly joining battles that you have been banned from will earn you a serverwide ban.
