Re: gimp question.
try using some noise or clouds then use a gaussian blur with a very high value, i use gimp too.
Re: gimp question.
Googling for: gimp brushed metal tutorial
Gave me this: http://gug.sunsite.dk/tutorials/brushed ... e0ddf64427
Actually, the search result gave me http://gug.sunsite.dk/?page=tutorials, which had a link to the above
There are a few brushed metal tutorials out there, but the ones I've looked at in the past have generally used this technique.
Cheers.

Re: gimp question.
On second thought, that one uses a filter that's not in the gimp anymore.
Here's what I'd do:
Filters > Render > Clouds > Solid Noise
Set the x and y size up high
Filters > Noise > Spread
Set the spread amount up quite high (like 80?)
Filters > Map > Make Seamless
Then do either:
(a) Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur
with different horizontal and vertical values
OR
(b) Filter > Blur > Motion Blur
Here's what I'd do:
Filters > Render > Clouds > Solid Noise

Filters > Noise > Spread

Re: gimp question.
Filters-> Add noise with no r.g.b. Then do a motion blur with zero angle.
Re: gimp question.
New image at something long and thin like 16x1024, add your noise, resize to 1024x1024.
