Couldn't the approach taken with the original treemap (that is, the buildings just mask an invincible piece of terrain in behind them) work for buildings? Obviously, you wouldn't be able to have skyscrapers, but a Paris-like city of midrise buildings should be doable, right? Then they'd have a near-proper collision box and planes wouldn't fly through them.
That's totally un-necessary, unless the planes fly artificially low over the terrain, or you have a reeeeeally huge building (in which case, there are methods you could use to generate a proper avoidance behavior that are still superior). World Builder stuff makes a lot of this thread seem rather quaint. The only real problem remaining is that Units attempt to shoot through the buildings, but meh, they did that in OTA, too!

Not to mention it would be a serious pain in the ass to make a map like that, and that planes' behavior would be bizarre and counter-intuitive. Planes don't see the terrain ahead of them, they are strictly responding to the terrain they're over right now. It's not a very good solution, frankly.

exactly... planes would fly vertical and bounce on the buildings...

weak.

we need the tag as argh describes...

planes collide with units, and in world builder the buildings will be units, right?, and there is the kloot patch, which is working, right?, i havent tested it.

the problem is that the planes wont try to avoid the buidings, they just hit, then them turn up, and fly, that is not a problem.

the problem is when the planes try to fly trought the buildings and shot, they dont collide, but the shot does, and then they get damaged.

another problem in urban maps, is that cruise missiles collide with the buildings, because of the way they fly, they go up alot, then aim at the target, and fly to it.

in ota, the missiles would go up, turn around to the direction of the target, fly until they are over the target, then fall down.

well.. airplanes run into buildings, and hit buildings in RL too..
and consider the missles a new "change of gameplay" for urban maps..

sigh...

its not gonna break the game...

it is not a big problem, just shot a bunch missiles and break the buildings, i would say, about 80-200 missiles to make a path to the enemy base.

it would be fun to make the planes explode when they hit the buildings,
that would make gameplay really realistic.

how urban maps would change the gameplay?, in my opnion some good strategies would be useless, and there would be new strategies.
