Idea/Suggestion: Sea map with cliffs

Post by TheFatController »

It seems like in 95% of sea maps the land masses are just meters above sea level, with beaches going straight into grassland or whatever which makes it nice for all-round hovercraft attack and naval bombardment but it would be nice to see some sea maps with coasts more like this:
s1.jpg
(83.46 KiB) Downloaded 96 times
and
s2.jpg
(75.72 KiB) Downloaded 79 times
With just a handful of land-to-sea chokepoints like the sandy slope that descends to the river on Tabula.

I feel a well made map with these kind of land masses and one large sea would give some different gameplay 8)

(I've tried to make one but I suck at heightmaps & have no terrain editing software!)

I agree, however my lack of RAM prevents me from making anything larger than 12x12 :P
If i go bigger than that, I have to do image splicing. And that takes eons to do. >_<

Obviously a mainly land map, but the cliffs are rather imposing :P

Thats an ancient greek vulcan, if i recognize it corectly. It exploded, so it left some small islands (one is oja). Well, what i want to say: we could adapt the theme. An ancient exploded volcano in the middle, having small islands around it. Much metal in the water, much in the middle :)
The volcano has some geyser left, expectorating sulphur vapour. That would be the geothermal things.

How about something like this? The grass is kinda ugly for the moment... still working on that.

It's unfinished project #6002. I probably should finish it at some point, I like the heightmap.

Both of them look like nice maps. I wish I could play a seabattle without having to rely on hovercraft though. :/

The problem with steep cliffs is the same on any map- porciness. It becomes hard to take the chokepoints. Add this to the difficulty you already have in trying to attack a land position from the sea and you can get very bogged down gameplay.

Ships are good for taking the sea, but all they can do to land is bombard it- something which is made MUCH more difficult or impossible if you have to do it uphill. Ships rely on hovercraft or air units (and, sometimes at t2, amphibs, but rarely) to take a land positions.

By all means make the maps though, they look good- there are lots of ways you can change the play or flow dynamic to ensure they dont become too porcy.
