Map file sizes

Post by SavageBT »

Is anyone else getting 100+ MB map files?
24x24, compression 0.5... any higher and it gets disgusting lines.

I had planned a map or two of this size but i thought, what's the point - who's going to download a 40 odd MB 7zip?

Try to use tiled texture map. It helps alot. I don't know the exact size of tiles, and would like the SY to tell me about it, but 32x32 96x96 64x64 or something like that should do it.

So, I'll weigh in here.

I think that people should be aiming at about 10 megs a map for the most part.

People who want to make maps that are really pretty, or huge maps, or both should aim at staying under 60.

Basically my theory is, people who have the money to own a computer good enough to play huge or highly detailed maps usually have high speed internet connections... and 60 megs is about what people can download in an hour on a medium/high speed connection.

Also, the game is fun without a perfect texture, many of the maps out there could work just as well with a plain or repeating pattern.

I wonder if we are getting problems with the height map however... a 4096*4096 bitmap is pretty huge file on it's own, does anybody know if they pull that part apart into tiles... because they usually arn't terribly detailed anyways.

I've been downloading at around 128 kilobytes per second from FU for the past several hours... Many many servers provide more than 16 KB/s of bandwidth...

I'm trying to compile a 32x32 map but i'm getting a out of memory message with mapconv (texture is 780mb)

we need to get a list of how much ram installed can create what sized maps

I have 768mb ram and the biggest map I've created is a 32x19 map

Yeah I had the same with a 700mb+ texture... It wouldn't compile with 15gb of pagefile and someone reminded me windows can (or will) only address so much memory to a single program... I think it was somewhere between 1.5 and 3gb... can we get some clarification from a guru here?

If we want the ability to share maps in the lobby client then we need to have maps smaller then 1 meg.

Maybe have a shared pool of commen tilesets in the maps dir so that the file size doesn't get so big.

A 32*32 will require about 2.1gb virtual mem to compile. Unfortunally a window program can only address 2.0gb if you dont change some system settings so until someone rewrites mapconv you cant create 32*32 maps.

can't you keep map sizes to 24x24? Any bigger is kind of ridiculous.

Clearly some people here have not had uber-massive games on 64x64 Epic-Class maps.
