What Argh is pushing for is a less CPU-intensive mode of LoS. Conical LoS would be a step in the opposite direction.
Right, but conical LoS would arguably be less graphics-intensive, since there's less stuff to render. It all depends on where your performance chokepoint is.

Something tells me that conical LOS would work absolutely horribly in an RTS, particularly when it came to unit intelligence, and unit behaviour.

something tells me that for a performance boost , there will be probably a lot a other place to look at.
