Spring 1944 using Engine 103

Post by Megatron »

Why is pre 104 engine banned from springlobby for BA, but S1944 for some reason has special permission to continue using this banned version of the spring engine?

Can anyone explain this preferential treatment?

Older versions can still be used if you limit rooms to 8 players

What is the explanation/reasoning for this limitation to 8 players per room?

The only explanation i can see is that spring 1944 has a smaller user-base, and they never have more than 4v4 (from my observation). This change would not effect them; it would only serve to force BA players onto a new engine while creating an arbitrary loophole that allows S1944 players to continue playing their preferred version on their preferred engine version. At the same time this forces a change on BA players who play larger games.

As far as i can tell S1944 is receiving special, preferential treatment.

If I am wrong someone please explain why the rooms are limited to 8 players....

Well I can tell you one thing, this rule wasn't put in place to benefit certain games and punish others.

Not a big fan of the 8 player limit myself, but I think the idea is to use the botflag to differentiate between official and unofficial hosts. Official ones have to adhere to stricter rules, which is (normally) a good idea if you ask me.
The other idea is that certain lobby clients could filter only official hosts by default, promising a better UX (don't think this is done yet, but it's also a generally good thing)

You claim the rule wasn't put in place to benefit s1944 and punish BA, and yet you offer no real explanation for the arbitrary 8 player limit. I reject your explanation. You can say it wasn't the intention, but I analyze things by the impact/results they have. This 8 player limit has clearly had the effect of banning ba 9.46 while finding a loophole to protect S1944.

You can feel free to reject it. I haven't much else to add except I suggest you read a bit on the history of the botflag by searching forums a bit

Everyone knows that I invented the botflag specifically to screw over BA, Gajop. Don't be coy. /s

Well, it does not. Morph is broken and is being slowly fixed by Joe/Code_Man. Other than that, I am not aware of any problems other than lack of players.

And yet no PMs ever appeared in my inbox over the past year and a half about it not working under 104.

It is assumed that anyone interested in s44 frequents #s44 and/or the hosts. I (and probably others as well) thought you two had lost interest. There have also been new posts on the new old forum that frju migrated.
