BA - frequent crashing on multiplayer games
Hi,
I just found out about Spring RTS and have been a long time TA fan.
We tried playing some 4 player multiplayer games with a few bots, and we had several clients crash, including the host server which kills the entire game.
We have the latest version of spring, and the machine that was hosting was Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with i7 processor and 20GB of ram.
Any suggestions for being able to play a good multiplayer game successfully? Is there a limit to units? We set them to 1500 each.
Thanks!

Re: BA - frequent crashing on multiplayer games
Look for infolog.txt in your spring folder and pastebin or attach it here.
Re: BA - frequent crashing on multiplayer games
Couldn't find any info*.txt files in spring or any subdirectory.
Re: BA - frequent crashing on multiplayer games
If you're on windows it may be under users/<name>/documents/my games/spring/
Re: BA - frequent crashing on multiplayer games
there is little difference in CPU/RAM requirements for the host machine and the peers, as the simulation is done on all computers

Try without bots!

Re: BA - frequent crashing on multiplayer games
two ideas for you:
1) Log into the online server using spring lobby (or zk lobby or tas client), find an autohost (or host your own battle) and use that as your server.
2) If you want to fix the crash then we need some more information before we know what your problem is. What is your graphics card? What error message (if any) do you get? What are you doing before/when it crashes?
There will be an infolog.txt somewhere - this is the logfile generated by spring and it would help alot If its not in the directory with spring.exe then I'd say run a search on your harddrive.

OH, and zwzsg is right - there are (afaik) no working skirmish AIs at the moment. Most spring is played online as a team game. Play without bots, humans are better :)

Play NOTA or other games (ZERO-K,...), there is working bot , but btw... Silentwings is right, humans are more funny enemies .Silentwings wrote:OH, and zwzsg is right - there are (afaik) no working skirmish AIs at the moment. Most spring is played online as a team game. Re: BA - frequent crashing on multiplayer games
Aren't bots for ZK and NOTA still extremely weak? There are 'working' bots for BA to if you want opponents that can't do much more than spam random-ish units at you.
Re: BA - frequent crashing on multiplayer games
CAI can probably beat most average skilled players, so I wouldn't call all ZK bots weak.

Re: BA - frequent crashing on multiplayer games
NOTA bot NOE is in alpha->beta stage, but 3 bots are enough to kill every player (except Godde) and one bot is able to kill standard noob or little exp. player.
Re: BA - frequent crashing on multiplayer games
This guy is obviously trying to play BA, for which E323AI, KAIK, RAI and AAI are known to work in current spring version.
that does not mean that they never crash for anyone.
but yeah... you need to find infolog.txt indeed; maybe try searching your harddisk (with the search wizard), if nothing else helps. if there really is none such file, it means that the engine/game was never running. did you lobby crash already? (it does not sound like but .. just ot be sure)

Re: BA - frequent crashing on multiplayer games
I found it under C:\Users\<user>\Documents\My Games\Spring.
We had several crashes without bots as well when it was 2 vs 2 human players.
I like to setup humans against bots, but either way, it's fun.

[f=0288570] Error in DrawWorldPreUnit(): not enough memory
you should play on a smaller map i guess...
(spring for windows is 32 bit which limits it to afaik 3GB of memory...)

Re: BA - frequent crashing on multiplayer games
We like large maps and lots of units. Any suggestion for a map? Would 1500 units cause the memory issue as well?

Sound like you should try NOTA
Re: BA - frequent crashing on multiplayer games
plain and paths: BA
Re: BA - frequent crashing on multiplayer games
kentiler: hard to say... trenches is one of the largest maps, any smaller map should "fix" your problems. With trenches spring requires 1.4GB of memory at the beginning. ai's require also memory... so you are already close to the limit at the beginning of a game. maybe use the taskmanager to see the memory usage of spring...
