Spring crashes while creating unit textures.
Hi! Sorry I didn't post this last year (or 2009? I guess when MT executable became main), because I would just play on a different computer and Spring would work fine there.
Spring used to work on this computer (Core2Duo1.8, Intel IGP, 3GB RAM, HP Laptop) when it was single-threaded, but CPU utilization would on max out around 50% (100% for one core, idle-ish on other), and games would get laggy during an 8v8 DSD around 40 minutes where everyone has a ton of nanos and airshield, etc. So I wanted to try MT... and it would crash (back when MT was downloaded seperately).
Now I want to play on my laptop (because I can't really use the other computer) and Spring keeps crashing before I can even get in game, and it seems like it was like this was back then so I tried several games on minimal spring settings (fresh install + vanilla BA7.19) and here are the results:
Attempting to run "C:\Program Files\Spring\spring.exe" through "Test Spring"(Spring 0.82.7, Commanders only, DSD, BA719) -> infolog.txt
http://pastebin.com/8At1UZHK
Attempting to run "C:\Program Files\Spring\spring-multithreaded.exe" through "Test Spring"(Spring 0.82.7, Commanders only, DSD, BA719) -> infolog.txt
http://pastebin.com/gqPr1WN7
Attempting to run "C:\Program Files\Spring\spring.exe" through SpringLobby (Spring 0.82.7, RAI 0.601, DSD, BA719) -> infolog.txt
http://pastebin.com/1wpCAtQz
Spring 0.77b4 (15-Oct-2008 00:05 from http://springrts.com/dl/ ), however, runs just fine -> http://pastebin.com/fxf8Sk3r
Any thoughts on what I can do to get the latest Spring engine to run (and, if possible, Multi-Threaded?)

Re: Spring has been crashing since MT exe has become main build
It never became main, do not use MT, it's not meant for real use, it crashes with most games.

Hm. Well, neither one works for me.

I know it's a crappy card, but spring ran well enough in the older version?
Re: Spring has been crashing since MT exe has become main build
First of all, you are not even running MT. Secondly, this is not MT related but almost certainly due to your crappy Intel "card". That it runs with an earlier version has no relevance here, system requirements have changed.

Re: Spring has been crashing since MT exe has become main build
Also on a laptop that used to run spring. Yes, the card is the same crappy integrated intel, but the log says it supports OpenGl 2.0.
Spring crashes without an explanation:
http://pastebin.com/ni6is0sM
hoijui said spring only needs OpenGL 1.4, so it is hard to believe the graphics card is really the problem here.

So where are the new system requirements? They aren't on the wiki:

Re: Spring has been crashing since MT exe has become main build
version 1.4 is a guideline for minimum GFX settings. it does not mean that if your card claims it supports 1.4+, it can run spring.

Re: Spring crashes while creating unit textures.
I was able to get past the "Loading Unit Textures..." part by modifying the Springsettings.cfg variable "BumpWaterTexSizeReflection=128" -> 32 just to see what would happen. It crashed about a minute later (in a different location in the dll?).
I uninstalled and wiped config directories again and tried with the 0.82.7.1 engine and BA7.20 and I'm still crashing during the loading of unit textures.
So... yeah. I guess my two options are:
1.) Play using the older Spring engine (no online :/)
2.) Play something else.
I'm not going to install a graphics card / buy a new laptop. So that's pretty much it, I take it? Or is there something else I can do to play online?

Re: Spring crashes while creating unit textures.
Oh. Okay, thanks hoijui. I had thought the OpenGL version numbers were uniform standards. I guess OpenGL compliance is more loose among graphics card manufacturers than I thought. I guess that's why the wiki lists successful systems on a case-by-case basis.

To Satans_Taco: you might try partitioning a bit of your hard drive for Linux. I partitioned a friend's computer for ubuntu, then installed the Linux version, and now Spring runs fine, albeit at low settings. This might mean that Win7 was screwing it up.

That's a great idea! I keep forgetting that I have an older Ubuntu partition that I keep meaning to wipe and try some other distros. Sweeeeeeeeeeet. It's been like 2 or 3 years since I played on my laptop :D

Re: Spring crashes while creating unit textures.
Cool. After updating the repositories, I was able to play Spring, lol. There were no textures on DSD (the entire map was completely white), but every other aspect of the game was playable.
After spending an hour and a half building adv. fusions, mohos, and nukes (the entire right three columns of the map were armed) I comnap'd the last com and flew him over my base where the large cluster of fusions was. I flew my commander over to greet him and nuked the entire area all at once. This caused the game to not only crash, but to terminate my login (I've never had that happen in linux before, lol) and boot me out to prompt.
Good times.

white map:

please attach infolgo.txt of that crashed game (usually it is better to do it right away, cause next time you may already have lost the file).

hoijui, you are telepathic. My friend just described exactly this white-map problem to me! I remember reading the page you recommended, once upon a time. It will be great to tell them that there's a fix.
Satans_Taco: glad to give you inspiration. But I don't know if your 1,000+ nuke fetish is healthy... maybe I've created a monster.

Re: Spring crashes while creating unit textures.
Yep, as usual, the fix worked perfectly!
We had a problem with my friend's mod/map check-sum always returning false. Again the forums triumphed: We deleted the springcontent.sdz and replaced it from a working install.
Everything is perfect now. They can't run any AI's that are more complicated than chickens/bugs/null. But I'm not going to worry about it since they only play people and bugs/chickens.

Re: Spring has been crashing since MT exe has become main build
MT has little or no performance gain, so don't use it.

Oh sweet, thanks hoi!
sorry i've been superbusy with new job and losing hdd sectors (vodka + windows 7 + music = bad sectors )
lol i should just wipe everything and freshinstall w/ better sized partitions but i've been superlazy after work.
thanks for your help all!
