Win 98 compatibility

Post by Zao »

Hello.

I'd like to know if TA Spring works on Windows 98?

I saw it on some random download sites, where it was indicated that it was compatible with 98.

Apparently there's a pretty nasty bug on Win98 where the shift key doesn't work. That makes it all but useless.

It works if you use a slightly older SDL dll. That said, UPGRADE!

that's sorta weird since win98 has no proper unicode support

Well, I'm on XP but my friend tried to install it yesterday on 98.

He says that when the installation finishes and when he lauches the program, there's a message box saying he's missing some XP file.

This is what he told me, I don't have more details yet.

I'm betting that's the reason - the NT family isn't so hot on backwards compatibility with 9x, and there are a lot of dirty, dirty hacks you can do on 9x. So, I imagine that Chinese language programs involved suck dirty, dirty hacks.

Well, where do you get this older SDL.dll?

Can't seem to find anything else than the 1.2.4.0 version. I guess that's the later one.

A far out thought, but the guy can upgrade to a better, free OS where Spring works (Xubuntu, Fluxbuntu, or any other user-friendly linux will work).

And start searching on the net for the dll meanwhile.

I think it's great that Asian players are finally starting to pick this game up, we've been missing the StarCraft crowd :-)

It's good! RTS games are very strong in Asia, and I think it would really help Spring gain more players!

98 has been end-of-lifed long ago, and for good reasons. World has gone forward and the line had to be drawn somewhere. Besides, it wouldn't be wise to expect support for an OS which no developer uses.

That OS was released ten years ago, and support for it was planned to be dropped four (but actually got dropped in two) years. There have been numerous improvements to the OS since then, and it's just silly to use something that old.

It's not like I'm selling you anything here, because it's free. And yes, if you want to play any decent modern game, I'm afraid you'll have to upgrage/switch OS's.

Ouf..

Ok forget it.

The game doesn't work on win 98 that's all. I don't need Morality like that. Just mention it in the requirement FAQ. The game DOESN'T work on WIN98...

Everybody will be happy with it. :-)

Yay! Another Spring player chased off by the warm and fuzzy personalities that roam the Spring forums! After all, we all know that we've got enough players. I can go online and play any mod I like, assured that there will be plenty of games open for every mod.

Seriously, what kind of idiot still uses win98?

No security whatsoever, and is a perfect target for keyloggers and trojans. Let the poor thing die, please for the love of god.

Security? OS security in windows has always been a joke. Live behind a router (and never open any windows service ports), use FireFox/T-bird, and don't download anything you don't trust. Same thing I do with XP, works fine on older versions too.

Up until recently I still had a win98 partition for the pile of apps, games, and hardware that I had collected that wouldn't play nice with XP.
