Riddle me this...

Post by Kixxe »

GRAH fucking hell. A friend told me this and i can't figure it out! O.o
[20:20:32] <[WarC]Kixxe> Okay, riddle me this
[20:20:51] <[WarC]Kixxe> 3 persons walk into a hotel, and the fee is 25 Euro
[20:20:56] <[WarC]Kixxe> they pay 10 each
[20:21:23] <[LCC]IaMaCuP> k
[20:21:32] <[WarC]Kixxe> they check in, and the luggage boy (whatever you call em) comes with the change
[20:21:45] <[WarC]Kixxe> the luggage boy gets 2 in tip, and everyone gets 1 euro each
[20:22:00] <[WarC]Kixxe> now, they payed 9 euro each, correct?
[20:22:07] <[WarC]Kixxe> since they got 1 back..
[20:22:18] <[WarC]Kixxe> so... 3x9 + 2 = 29
[20:22:24] <[WarC]Kixxe> where did the last euro go?

The equation is wrong.
look at it this way:
3x9 - 2 = 25

Although adding the 2 seems intuitive, it doesn't make any sense.

O WAIT, IT'S A FREAKING TRICK QUESTION!!!

3x10 = 30

30 - 25 = 5

5 - 2 = 3

3/3 = 1!!! You bastard

Actually, it doesn't. Unless the mint on the pillow costs an extra euro.

there's two things making up the price:
the 25 euros and the 2euro tip. adding them gives 27, which is exactly 3x9.

The thing is, it's the wrong part of the change being used here. Adding 2 is just as absurd as adding the 25 to the sum. The total change is 5, the clerk kept 2, so it should be 5-2 in there, giving

3x9 + 3 = 30

I rest my case.

Most such math riddles tend to be based around manipulation of the original concept farther down th puzzle, so to speak.com

You don't need to know any maths to solve such a stupid riddle... :P
Boy returns with the change of 5, keeps 2 and returns 1 to each.
30 - (25+2+1+1+1) = 0. Tada. Are you in junior high?

Frankly, you're a fool for posting this on a forum of le geeks, Kixxe. We've ALL heard it before, one way or another. I personally heard it in the clock sale format and worked it out in about half a second, back in High school, during maths... (my tutor had a habit of giving us oddball riddles n things)

yes, and the point is that they pay is that they pay 9 each, then +2 from the tip, but that only becomes 29... if they payed 9 each, where did the last one go? (ergo so it's not "30 - (25+2+1+1+1) = 0")

but that's wrong since the 9x3 = 27 which has the 2 already included. blah blah blah.

You challenge, I answer:

2 trains, 1 from Paris to Barcelona, the other heading the other way. First is a diesel engine and is traveling at 200mph, the other an electric at 120 mph. They collide exactly on the border between France and Spain. Serious damage and casulties. Where do they bury the survivors?
