Screenshots usually just show an engine... you can get the exact same graphics using SM3, only slower.

I'm still waiting on a OpenGL geometry shader extension :)

Regardless of whether all the hype is true, having a unified feature set on graphics cards will be a lot easier on game developers, no?

True, but you can only use it in a few years when the users actually have a dx10 card.

actually zaphod i've been using the dx10 beta since february and geuss what it runs faster than dx9 it has a fallback mode for dx9 compatable cards

Ok, but the dx9 fallback will not have all the dx10 functionality actually implemented (or in software which sucks too), so you still end up with different capabilities for different hardware. Which is the same situation as previous DirectX API's. So I can't really say this situation is better than it was, maybe even worse because you don't really know what is supported and whatnot (less clear specification for fallback hardware).

min3mat it only works in vista (thanks ms for the non drm builds) though its in the february dxsdk. works well its a bloody nice change from the pile of crap that is dx9 faster less bloated and as i said before metaballs
me hugs unified shader (kicks opengl right in the backside for games atleast)
