War Machines RTS

I stumbled upon a curiosity (it seems not to have been mentioned in the forum yet)...

Well it's definitely Spring. (Unlike the entire MARS debacle, where they openly denied it. Was that ever resolved?) Unfortunately this project doesn't seem to have gone anywhere. I wonder if the devs are still around.

Its got some cool stuff, very advanced for a 1 man project. I like his orbital station map :)

They list 4 teammembers actually.

I downloaded it but it required account creation with email, for singleplayer: Too much hassle.
The updater worked though.
So I did not play it, but:
It is just BA with different textures? And some new or reworked maps.
I openend the mod-file and from the scriptnames there does not seem to be anything new.

Just TA derived, not BA derived, from what I can see. As are many/most Spring projects ultimately, but from screenshots it hews closer to the TA mechanic than say ZK.

Where do you see that?
I see:
same team-died messages as in BA.
unitdef files as lua-files (no lua in TA) and some numbers are same as in BA

Sadly BA's git history was messed up, makes it harder to compare.

You can just launch it via the Spring.exe and have a look. I didn't look at the unit stats in detail but it basically seems to be BA unit choice wise except for like 2-3 additions (there e.g. was THIS building for Arm). He replaced the TA textures with the basic style you see on the pictures although things like e.g. the nuke missile stil is the TA model and the game thus also comes with the TA textures. So still a little rough around the edges. Apart from that there seem to be some attempts at making missions but I didn't have a detailed look at this...

I kinda liked the cursors, the GUI and the Lobby/Launcher done via Clickteam Fusion also is quite interesting...

EDIT:
But yeah - BA definitely was the basis with this in the modoptions:

Code: Select all

  {
       key="ba_modes",
       name="Balanced Annihilation - Game Modes",
       desc="Balanced Annihilation - Game Modes",
       type="section",
    },
    {
       key="ba_options",
       name="Balanced Annihilation - Options",
       desc="Balanced Annihilation - Options",
       type="section",
    },

Just surmised from screenshots, I could well be wrong. Are BA team-died messages different from the OTA ones? Are they different from the AA ones? If so I retract. Otherwise it might have branched off from anywhere. FBI can be auto converted to lua defs.

Wouldn't be the first time someone took a project and re-badged it without permission. Hell, that's Caydr did to make AA anyway, its quite the tradition.

WMRTS.sdz\gamedata\messages.luaold :
"Team%i (%s) must remember that dying in BA is never your own fault",

I did not know stealing projects was so common in spring. Now it does not surprise me anymore how supportive admins and devs were in helping BA10 people to steal BA.

User was warned for this post, Felony 2

Open Source is about giving. Yes there are hamster and gremlins out there, yelling mine, but this is about giving to humanity. Under conditions.
If you touch the GPL, and you dont name a license, you are GPL. So feel free to copy this.

Fwiw I (wrote most of and) licensed my final version of these death messages here as WTFPL: https://github.com/Balanced-Annihilatio ... ges.lua#L1. In any case the legality of an unknown and long dead fork from a project that was copyleft anyway is not interesting.

Please report posts instead of using replies, see https://springrts.com/wiki/Reporting for why.

While I fully agree with rationale of "why", I can't help, but notice the forum is filled up with troll posts from a very few individuals, who for some reason receive very lenient treatment.
Soon (if not now already) all normal people will stop posting here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_windows_theory

Nobody said anything about legality or licences?
The question was how WMRTS was made, if it was based on another spring game or on the original TA.
By comparing files the answer is: WMRTS was made by modding BA.
