Well in part they helped develop Vulkan which is another low level, standardized API based on Mantle, so that's a win-win for everyone.

I admit to beeing a fanboy until JK enlightend me on the hardware bound nature of this endavour.
It did what it had to do- prove that you can coerce companys and competitors into creating new stuff via a glorified tech-halluzination .

This is the real reason we should celebrate. Vulkan is intend to be a replacement to opengl.gajop wrote:Well in part they helped develop Vulkan which is another low level, standardized API based on Mantle, so that's a win-win for everyone.

Re: Ha! Halting mantle suck it!
I guess that what happened is mantle became value-less to AMD beyond its initial propaganda buzz, and they packaged it off to the open source world and renamed it a bit in the hope of some sympathy based publicity. But the *best* past of all this is the quality re-assurance from AMD to ex-mantle usersso that's a win-win for everyone.
It's good to know they aren't actively trying to break things for their customers.AMD wrote:Mantle titles will probably still work on these products ... AMD isn’t going out of their way to break backwards compatibility
Re: Ha! Halting mantle suck it!
Truth is: Vulkan is Mantle.
The current non-pulic drafts are 90% Mantle headers, which are now cleaned up & improved by all other contributes. Giving the other vendors the chance to adjust the API to better reflect all hw and not just AMD ones.
Never the less Vulkan/Mantle is a monster in code size (you need a lot more code to do stuff than with OpenGL), we will see how much of that can be moved into abstraction frameworks. And no Vulkan likely won't `replace` OpenGL for the moment at least.
Also the reason AMD is stopping their Mental support is:
1. the speed up is often marginal and doesn't reflect the invested time & money (check Civ: Beyond Earth benchmarks)
2. AMD has and always had money problems, so they likely cut of jobs again. So they just don't got the workforce to send out programmers to the projects to support them with their Mantle work.

Dont know if happy if the one in dread of vannishing from the market gets open sourcey all of the sudden.
