I used to own 54mbps wifi router, but upgraded because of lower speed due to processing needs like QOS. But then processing needs doesn't end there as a source of speed loss. The standard dictates that the destination is responsible for reassembly of the packet fragments. As the newer hardware comes out, stuff gets move around in motherboard. So does anyone know where does the reassembly occurs? Ethernet card, ethernet controller, wifi card, central processor, chipset, ???

Except for server NICs, it is done by drivers in your OS -> CPU.

Regarding internet access: IMO above a certain threshold... let's say minimum 15/10 mbit... other qualities than bandwidth alone are more important:
* latency ("ping time")
* reliability (how often service down? disconnects every day once? etc)
* net neutrality (throttled UDP/ports?)
* static IP
