Killing floor.

Post by smoth »

So it feels like they nerfed the hell out of the commando. Demo and pyro do a boat load more damage and really, they don't need to SEE the stealth enemies when they blow up the whole hall..

so what am I missing about the commando?

I don't think you're missing much. The classes are balanced primarily for Suicidal/Hell On Earth difficulties, but even then there are essential classes (Medic, Sharpshooter) and non-essential classes.

I only recently started playing again and actually trying out most of the classes - I played one unpopular class for the great majority of my game time - it seems to me that the primary benefit of Commando is in automatic fire and fairly inexpensive ammunition. It is between roles; it can do poor crowd control or poor priority targeting, whereas Firebug/Demolitions/Support Specialist are geared toward crowd control and Sharpshooter/Berzerker are focus on priority targets.

The commando is nice I suppose for focus firing husks, sirens and bloats. Plus, if you have a few players, it's nice to have someone who can see the boss when he cloaks. Other than that, he's pretty weak I think...

In my opinion, the only class really essential is support specialist. 11 grenades, pump and automatic shotguns, a grenade launcher and pipe bombs - no other class can match that amount of ordnance. At least on suicidal/hell on earth, running out of ammo became a problem for me for most classes. 3-4 support specialists with AA12 + pipe bombs have a fair chance of instantly killing the boss when he steps into the ambush, plus a single high level support specialist is usually enough to kill a fleshpound on any difficulty.

Sharp is kinda good, but is harder to play effectively on high difficulties imo. Medic? It's better to have someone who can watch your back and actually kill stuff before they hurt you.
