beside gameplay & visuals what makes for a good competive game is how good the replays system works and if you can have spectators to easily stream games and all that.

I suspect a good part of it would be a few things:
  • Good spectator/replay mode for people to watch and learn from.
  • Higher emphasis on micro, that way the player makes a large bit of the unit performance. if the unit is too intelligent you end up either fighting to get what you want or it is on auto play
  • solid ladders/matching
