Isn't the second blob a word as well?

ReCaptcha is one of the easier ones imho. Looks like yours didn't load right. Googles is by far the most annoying one I've encountered.

first is testing you (the captcha), second word is for your input to the system (show it to enough people and try to reach a consenus).

An elegant solution to 2 problems as it generates proven words that confused a computer but not humans and at the same time helps digitise books. Don't think that black blob is gonna happen though..

google bought recaptcha a couple of years ago

recaptcha is always two words.
worst was rapidshare when you had to enter only the letters with cats.
took me some time to notice some cats were actually dogs.

anybody ever seen one of those?

It is actually a facebook comment field and if you try to solve the captcha it will post the entered text as comment or something.

Recaptcha is the one where they're doing it as a bizarre sort of charity, that's why often the words aren't solvable.

There are always two words for recaptcha - one of them is the real captcha, and the other one is a word from a historical text that an automated system was trying to scan in and compile into a digital document... a word it couldn't read through OCR methods, so it got sent to Recaptcha to analyze.

Recaptcha then harnasses the power of millions of internet users to read the word. Users try to get it right because they don't know which one is the "real" word and which isn't.

In this case, the OCR program that bumps illegible words off to Recaptcha obviously misidentified that weird blob as text when it's anything but.

Just write "penis".

recapcha is the way to go for world domination. harness the brain power of millions for problems computers have difficulties with (pattern recognition) without them noticing becoming part of a vast cluster. makes me think of ghost in the shell... good idea to combine it with an award function - brains love that.
