Does anyone know how the mouse pad on laptops and iPod scroll wheels work? If so, how? I was just curious.

I thought that someone here might know something more about it than I do. I wouldn't have thought to look for capacitive sensing like revenge did.

Literally copy&pasting the first sentence makes google find stuff:

That page is not accurate though. Actually there are roly polyies inside.

"The Cyberiad" by Stanislaw Lem

Come, let us hasten to a higher plane,
Where dyads tread the fairy fields of Venn,
Their indices bedecked from one to n,
Commingled in an endless Markov chain!

Come, every frustum longs to be a cone,
And every vector dreams of matrices.
Hark to the gentle gradient of the breeze:
It whispers of a more ergodic zone.

In Riemann, Hilbert or in Banach space
Let superscripts and subscripts go their ways.
Our asymptotes no longer out of phase,
We shall encounter, counting, face to face.

I'll grant thee random access to my heart,
Thou'lt tell me all the constants of thy love;
And so we two shall all love's lemmas prove,
And in our bound partition never part.

For what did Cauchy know, or Christoffel,
Or Fourier, or any Boole or Euler,
Wielding their compasses, their pens and rulers,
Of thy supernal sinusoidal spell?

Cancel me not--for what then shall remain?
Abscissas, some mantissas, modules, modes,
A root or two, a torus and a node:
The inverse of my verse, a null domain.

Eclipse of bliss, converge, O lips divine!
The product of our scalars is defined!
Cyberiad draws nigh, and the skew mind
Cuts capers like a happy haversine.

I see the eigenvalue in thy eye,
I hear the tender tensor in thy sigh.
Bernoulli would have been content to die,
Had he but known such a2 cos 2¤ò!

Ah, cool page. It says that humans or fruit can be used to control the touch sensitive wheel because it can conduct electricity, sort of like how lightning (electricity) will single out a person standing in a lake and strike that person specifically if it strikes the water.

umh. you need to train your search skills a lot then. its quite silly to come here to create new topic to ask a question for everything... not to mention you seem to write every word in the title with first big letter... trolling? or just being a yankee? or perhaps a spambot...

Here is how you find it:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+laptop+mouse+pad+works
1) First result is "touchpad" which means you chose the wrong word, but close enough!
2) You open this link, and it gives nice information, looks like you found what you were searching for:
Operation and functionTouchpads operate in one of several ways, including capacitive sensing and conductance sensing. The most common technology used as of 2010[update] entails sensing the capacitive virtual ground effect of a finger, or the capacitance between sensors. Capacitance-based touchpads will not sense the tip of a pencil or other similar implement. Gloved fingers may also be problematic.
3) Winrar! No need to create any topics and wait for 2 days!

Gg, Trademark, how do you ever ask anyone anything technology related on the forum with all of those rules for asking questions? How stifling. Plenty of people go on forums and ask questions for discussion and clarification even if they do have the ability to look things up. That's part of the point of having a forum. Try not to be so black and white, ok? Racism is a nasty thing.

I think that my title for this post looks nice too. It looks just like an article title.

Capacitance sensing seems pretty cool. I'm thinking about writing something in my blog about it.

so you want that everyone spams questions on this forum if they wanna know something? while the answers are so much easier to find on google... if you want to discuss about capacitive sensoring, then its ok to make a topic about it, but this topic seems to only please your need for knowledge which the forum isnt for, there are some websites on the internet for such purposes already. -- Racism? lol wut?
Panda wrote:I think that my title for this post looks nice too. It looks just like an article title.
lol no. How Is It Nice To Read Text Like This? there are strict rules in our schools (in finland) that forbids the way you wrote the topic title. if you wanna write like that, then be prepared to be declared as a moron.

Do they really teach that in the schools in america? "Write Like This And You Will Look Smart" ? Do they really tell you to write like that ? Unbelievable.

Ah, Trademark is expressing a need for attention by implying that I am a moron because of the title of my post. Ok, Trademark this question is specifically for you:

Who is your daddy and what does he do?

lol. i need attention? you were the one who makes topics fixed specifically for yourself.

"whos my daddy" ? i dont understand the point of that question. are you trying to insult me being a kiddy again? haha. hilarious.

also by not answering to my previous questions, but expecting an answer for your own questions is a serious issue on your ego.
