Anyone tried this?
It is a remake of C&C Red Alert on a new engine but with the original graphics. Basically like Spring/TA started.
The original game files are required but it automatically downloads them. Appearently that is legal because the original game is up for free download on EA's site since some time anyway.
There are "mods" for Red Alert and Tiberium Wars, no idea if they plan to make more games or how moddable it is. Everything downloads from within game.

It is not exactly like the original, apart from balance some other things are changed/fixed:
-It actually works (on XP for sure, but also some people online seem to use win 7 and ubuntu)
-multiplayer
-replays (but no replays controlls yet)
-slightly diff. graphics etc

My thoughts on the old C&C games used to be that they were great at their times but did not age so well.

But then I found this yesterday and so far it seems very playabe.
For example the buildmenu now has ques (no more having to click for every infantry guy, hooray), that alone makes a huge difference.

It is not perfect though, sometimes no conyards are spawned but after a rehost it works etc.
There are not that many players but was able to play 10 games or so, from 1v1 to 3v3. So far there was always at least one open game when I tried.

You can also play vs the AI is which not really a challenge but ok for testing out if the game works.
Soundtrack not included but supposedly you can dl it somewhere and if you copy the files in, it will play.

For hosting games, a port must be forwarded.

It is written in C#, they use git/github, supply a Windows .exe, a package for OS X, a .deb (Debian/Ubuntu), .rpm (Fedora/Red Head) and something for Arch Linux.

there are two mods, "Red Alert" and "C&C"
I think "C&C" is based on the first C&C (tiberian dawn)
on the forum there are lots of custom maps but did not try to play them yet so no idea if they autodownload or not.

you asked if someone wants to play and my somehow short formulated question "cnc1?" shall be translated to "if we play online, could we play the cnc1 mod?"

afaik your from germany to knorke, would be nice, no timezone problems

oh ok, misunderstanding. yes, german.
i am currently playing online. not many players but if some get together the host usually reopens after a game so i just played a series of 4 games or so.
i can not host myself though..can you?

also /join #openra in springlobby for easier meeting up?

This seems to be really well done. I like the improved interface and the sensible gameplay changes which are obviously made by fans of the original, like slightly different costs, Infantry not getting crushed by tanks (improves already excellent gameplay by 100%), improved way of building walls, no more possible to expand with silos, weapons acting a bit differently etc..

Red alert is an excellent RTS, one of the best, and I actually think it aged very well.

But we already know how it goes, its just one of those sparks that vanishes into obscurity, instead of sparking a fire.

Anyway, since no game is up right now, I just opened one...

i was never good at ra or c&c but what was the purpose of infantry anyway ? (except campaign)

This is pretty awesome. Had a go with c&c 1 which was my fav of the series. Other than the zoom level being wwwwaaaaayyyy out (which in many ways is a good hting), it's pretty much awesome.

OK, 2 major issues.
#1 cant change resolution...I put the on i want restart the game and its still as it was.
#2 I cant change the player name...It just stays on newbie.
