This book tells the story, starting with construction and continuing through to parallel the plot of the original Star Wars movie (episode IV, A New Hope), of the first Death Star. From a literary perspective it is not really a pinnacle of modern sci-fi writing, but it is, for the most part, a decent read. The characters are painfully one-dimensional and the plot twists are predictable, the love interests are contrived and the butchery of "Movie Cannon" unforgivable... but all in all not a complete waste of time or paper.

I give it 2 and a half Death Stars out of a possible 5.
