I like Magix Video deluxe. It's pretty easy and has a mediocre featureset delivering any not too special features. The last one I own is the 2005 or 2006 edition so in the meantime even some additions have been made (although the differences between every version are rather small)...

It might be quite similar - I cannot really remember the Ulead Video Studio. Have a look at this screen from an old version:
http://images5.slashcam.de/texte/259-Ma ... laeche.jpg

At the bottom you see the timeline. It consists of multiple channels and you can drag&drop whatever you want be it videos, sound files or images (you have a resource browser at the top right you also can use to select premade FX or transitions which get previewed there). You always can view you video at any time by setting the respective time (a simple click at the time bar above the channels or even just hit the play button for realtime playback) and watch the result in the video screen at the top left...

It's all extremely easy and intuitive. There also should be a demo version so you can try it for yourself. It also ships with a buttload of special and transition FX (while you also have the possibilities to make effects of your own - for this there usually are own editor windows popping up)...

I only can recommend it...

BTW - just saw that it's called "Movie Edit Pro" in English speaking countries:
