Preview of new AvP game

Post by Spawn_Retard » 15 Jan 2010, 17:05

Short video previewing each races perspective.

http://webtv.idnes.cz/?relation=V100114 ... ownload_oz

The graphics just make my penis throb with joy.

One point though to all of the AvP fans in this community, whats your opinion on the rock paper scissors system?

I dont mean by attributes based on what race your playing, more on the block, quick attack, and heavy attack system.

essentialy :

Block > quick attack
quick attack > heavy attack
heavy attack > block

This is then applied to the races as follows :

quick attack = melee
heavy attack = pouncing
block = crossing of the arms <---- lol when you actually see it ingame.

As you can see from the video, who ever plays the marine uses quick attack about 2-3 times on one alien to stop it from pouncing.

although marines can only quick attack and block

Now this game is based on the alien 1-3 movies, and predator 1-2 movies, and discounts behaviour in the alien vs predator movies as they are seemed cannon.

Now going by this humans were not even close to being able to use their strenght to A. Stop a alien or predator attack, and futher more B. outright kill either of the two species.

I mean normally i wouldn't pick on something like this, and in my own mind im trying to ignore things to pick at because it needs to be balanced somehow, no matter how strange, but i think its my love for the series' of movies that makes me want this to be as realistic as possible to the movies.

What's your thoughts?

Oh and for my final point, to anyone who doesnt care about the movies or this game in general, what does the gameplay show? a good game? or is my love for the previous games blinding me to the fact it looks shockingly terrible? :p

First of all its not true humans couldn't deal with an alien in "aliens" the troops kick ass but they are overwhelmed.
The game looks nice i just hope it wont be as demanding as crysis or at least not more demanding :).
In terms of realism, yes id wish it was more realistic but implementing it to create a fun gameplay is hard as hell.
It would be more realistic for example if you lead a group of marines as oppose to just one but the gameplay with groups is usually much less smooth.

I'd also wish that when u kill a marine with the alien just 5 meters from another marine he wont just keep standing doing nothing as oppose to run to the spot where the alien is attacking or where there is shooting or/and becoming more alert...
Just smarter AI compared to the old ones.

The game is been downgraded for consoles also.

This does not mean however that they will use the same game for the PC.

Theres also dedicated servers for this game.

In a PC mag i read on a review on this game, they showed what type of hardware you had to have.

Essentially minimum specs are dual core with nvidia 8800.

predators are meant to be about 4x as strong as a average human, and aliens are meant to be stronger and faster than this.

This is going by AVP movies though, which is cannon, but i still think this is a good representation.

With a butt of your weapon, i dont think you can stop a 500 lb 7 foot tall predator, or speeding alien.

For me they'd just need to do a technically updated AvP2. Now this is the first real gameplay video I saw showing a bit more than e.g. the Predator owning stuff and to say the truth I don't know if some things are a good idea. While of course in the end you have to play it in order to do a final comment I don't like what the Marine can do there. The Marine was all about long range combat and not letting anything get near you. It's pathetic if you now can block a close-up alien attack and also ruins a bit of the atmosphere as you don't have to get nervous when something gets near you - you still can block it...

So I don't think this is a good idea as it destroys lots of the general marine gameplay (and even might make them overpowered as Aliens simply have to get into close combat and Predators also work best when being close as otherwise you run out of energy too fast)...

I liked the constellation where it was like Predators > Marines > Aliens > Predators. At least that's the way I always perceived it in AvP2 while in the end it of course is skill that matters but to my mind there were these tendencies. Predators with their cloaking can really play tricks on the Marines and kill them either on a distance or in close-combat. At the same time they're blind to one species (you don't really play in normal or Pred-view that long) and have a disadvantage in close combat when its against aliens (which they in the end have to compensate with their long range weapons / getting away from those alien bastards as fast as possible - although it also was cool to play it the real Predator way and just kill the things with your spear or claw). Marines while being a bit weak against Predator surprise attacks really just kick ass against aliens. The smaller aliens either get ripped by smartguns, general rifles or rifle grenades while the bigger ones either are slowish (Preatorians) or just not that fast & sneaky (Predaliens). Aliens profit from always being able to see Predators just as having them "shine" in the dark just like all enemies giving them a hard time especially in matches with marines and aliens around...

In the end I spent most time playing Predator followed by Marine. I don't know if it's because I like the Predator so much but as Marine my specialty really was Predator hunting. I guess my reaction time sucked too much for getting any good at playing the Alien - it's just way too fast & confusing for me. While I can expect which routes would be a good one when being attacked by Aliens I just fail at actually following them when playing one...

I just hope AvP3 will come close AvP2. Graphics are good while not outstanding (with it being PC only there most certainly would be quite an improvement in max settings). The general concept also seems right (futuristic setting from the Alien movies and not the stupid storylines playing today like in the two movies) and there are good approaches like the markers at specific positions so you can jump to them instead of handling everything yourself while there also are bad ones like e.g. the Predator ripping off the head. I first read about it in a magazine and thought that after the movies this finally is the right way but when I saw it ingame I found it way too unrealistic and just time consuming to watch (while also being a bit disgusting)...

But well I probably shouldn't moan as it's one of the extremely few shooters I'm really interested in for the past few years...

Wait, you can block in this? I was thinking it was going to be primarily a remake of the original AvsP game.

Looks good either way.

edit: imho AvsP2 was inferior to the original. Monolith has a habit of putting tons of really elaborate clever ideas into their games, but not necessarily ones that come together to produce good gameplay.

I assume you meant 'deemed canon' (as in: canonical) although you appear to be using the word for its exact opposite meaning.

deem
2. to hold as an opinion; think; regard: He deemed it wise to refuse the offer.

canÔïàon
3. the body of rules, principles, or standards accepted as axiomatic and universally binding in a field of study or art: the neoclassical canon.

looks good; the atmosphere of the video reminds me of the part of aliens where ripley is hunting around with the flamethrower.

i'm always reluctant to invest in movie franchise games; but hey they arent ALWAYS bad so who knows...

i'd like to see predator and robocop vs terminator and aliens personally.

@ KaiserJ

The rule with adaptations is timeliness. If they're timely - released on-schedule to cash-in on the movie? They'll suck.

If they were made years after the movie (or, in the case of the original AvsP games, the comic-book)? They can be quite good - usually it's a sign the people involved have a genuine love for the source material if they want to work on it when it isn't a hot tie-in commodity.

I meant, the community, and sega furthermore ignore the two AvP movies.

So who will be buying this game?

I've already pre-ordered for both xbox 360 and PC :P

I never played the originals out of ignorance that they even existed. From what I've heard though I'd have probably enjoyed them a lot, and I'll probably be buying this game if it's any good. It'll have to be very popular to warrant a purchase from me though, being a multiplayer-centric title after all.

Shattered Horizon, I felt, was a pretty solid game (for the price) with a lot going for it. But unless there's something wrong with my network configuration, there's been literally almost nobody playing it since just a few weeks after release. It's altogether depressing, you hit "refresh servers" and you get about 10 pages of servers, only one single server of which has anyone at all playing. After that experience, now I'm a bit paranoid about buying something which relies so heavily on other people.

I feel embarassed for the position Futuremark's in - they announced two big free DLC packs and began work on a bunch of other free improvements... and now there's nobody to download them. This, right after Valve gets shit for not keeping DLC promises, and MW2 gets shit for not supporting the PC version properly. So what do they do, get the "shitty support" stigma, or waste thousands of dollars on something that will be downloaded 200 times?

Shattered Horizon shot itself in the foot by excluding any support for windows XP.

Not being sentimental here but the original AvP game was VERY good. It got everything right: the atmosphere, the graphics, the gameplay (multi and single), the networking (it was SO easy to setup LAN or serial games compared to other games of that time). It was a regular favorite at LAN parties.

The balance was good. Although the predator was probably the toughest, the alien was badarse when used by experienced players. The marine was the weakest but the familiarity helped n00bs get started.

It didn't take itself too seriously. Some of the levels feel like Serious Sam where you're running around backwards trying to mow down hordes of charging and leaping aliens.

It was a tough act to follow and AvP2 didn't have the goods. My first experience with AvP2 was that it was TOO dark. I appreciate atmosphere but hours of bumping into walls and getting eyestrain just isn't as fun as it sounds. It also lagged on my hardware.

Maybe the new one will be good, maybe not. I don't buy into hype anymore. I particularly don't get very excited when its a console game; since that typically means losing all immersion to horrible over-sized glowing UI elements, condescending tutorial missions and warnings telling me "not to switch off my PC" while I'm playing or saving like I'm a fucking retard.

Exactly, fuck Vista and Windows 7. Fuck Microsoft for not backporting DX10. Fuck paying for an "upgrade" that does nothing except make your computer slower. Fuck games companies for locking themselves into DirectX.

Well to my mind AVP1 wasn't any "brighter" at all. I also have to say that I loved the darkness when playing as Marine (plus you have flares and a shoulder lamp so you at least could light things up a bit). Aliens didn't really have any problems due to their navigation view and as Predator you just had to use the Pred-View...

The lagging of AVP2 is true though and it even doesn't run fluid on my recent PC in like the open parts of the first Pred stage. Common problems of the Lillith engine afaik...

I hope too though that you won't feel to much of a console compromise when actually playing AVP3. I'm still going to buy it blindly as a sequel to AVP2 that doesn't look like total trash has been on my buying list for a long time. Let's hope for a good campaign and finally taunting some marines in multiplayer mode you see running around below you while being cloaked. I really loved to scare them like this in Pred vs Human games...

Really, you can tell your computer will not be able to run the game if you think vista or windows 7 actually slows your computer down D:

Sad but true statement.

I thought AVP 2 was pretty awesome as a squeal, i've known a lot worse squeals for highly rated games.... saying that.... the update for number 2 should not even be talked about.

I've had nothing but trouble setting lan games up though... especially today with stuff like hamachi, it just doesnt seem to show up other players.

The interesting feature in AvP was its asymmetry - Aliens and Predators and Humans weren't intended to be balanced in multiplayer. They actually scored differently per-kill. My buddies and I would often play the "species team deathmatch" mode where you were allied with your own race - and keep the race limits proportional to the score-value. So if you were on the Marine team, you'd be outnumbering the Preds 3 to 1... and it'd be a pretty fair fight.

Considering that you're always so serious, seeing you be sarcastic is a bit of a mindfuck, but good point nonetheless.

AvP looks interesting, but I'll test before I purchase, as usual.

Yeah, but my practical experience was a little underwhelming on one point... why does 7 suck up ~900 MB of RAM while idle?
