I would check the isp on that network incase your running into bandwidth caps. We may have sense but they may not.

My Firefox is on a netbook, I want to maximize the useful space, hence plain and small. It is still Firefox 3, complete with all the fail features.

you could always merge the top two bars and get more space, or use chromifox to put the tabs in the window title.

"Smart" Location Bar.
"Smart" history handling.
Increased memory footprint.
Process termination problems.
Session termination problems.
Failure to support older extensions.
Unnecessarily enormous basic GUI.

Thank you, I'll look into those options, though merging wasn't acceptable.

There are other extensions that put the tabs on the window bar, chromifox just came to mind.

Not when you know all the mac addresses of all the devices on your network. It's called a whitelist for a reason :-)

Or upgrade to 3.5.

Memory footprint is smaller (to 3.0, though no where near 2x)
You can disable smart location bar. (Though shut up, you're part of the small vocal minority that why we don't get nice things - *I* quite like it :P)
