Most played-through games

Post by Caydr »

Very recently Gota made a thread like this but this one has a slightly different question and reason for asking. Gota wants to know the best game(s) you played recently, while this one is more about games you've played, complete, multiple times. I mean, I love Tie Fighter, but to date I've only ever made it to like the 8th campaign or something, then I got bored with it... I've played pretty much every Metroid game - once.

Also, this one is open to games on any platform. Except Mac, which isn't so much a platform as a status symbol.

What games have you played through from beginning to end the most? Try to make a rough estimate how many times you've played them. Games where the average playthrough is less than an hour don't count. No L4D. And definitely nothing by PopCap.

Mine:
Deus Ex - 20+ times at least (realistic, of course)
STALKER - 3 times
STALKER CS - 2 times
KOTOR - 3 times at least
Space Rangers 2 - 3 times
Imperium Galactica - 3 times
Imperium Galactica 2 - 5+ times
Jedi Knight (Dark Forces 2) - 4 times
Freespace 2 - 2 times
Vectorman (Genesis) - 3 times
I-War 2 - 2 times
X-Com - 4 times

It is interesting, most of my full games were done either in marathons or on the go. I'm sure I'm missing a handful, but not many. I haven't had the time to play through many games in the past half-decade; and frankly, most titles from the period haven't been good enough to bother anyway.

I long had a very limited selection of games, and then limited opportunity, as I have now.

Daedalan Opus (GB) - 5 Times
Gauntlet Dark Legacy (Arcade/PS2) - 2 Times
Gauntlet Legends (Arcade/N64) - 3 Times
Sonic 2 (Genesis) - 4 Times
Starcraft & Brood War (PC) - 2 Times
Warcraft III & Frozen Throne (PC) - 2 Times
Total Annihilation (PC) - 2 Times
Call Of Duty 2 (PC) - 2 Times
Link's Awakening (GB) - 3 Times
Final Fantasy (NES) - 4 Times
Final Fantasy Legend 2 (GB) - 2 Times
Ninja Gaiden (NES) - 3 Times
Ninja Gaiden 2 (NES) - 2 Times
Blaster Master (NES) - 2 Times
T.M.N.T. 4 (Arcade/SNES) - ~15 Times
T.M.N.T. 2 (NES) - 3 Times
Streets Of Rage (Genesis) - 4 Times
Streets Of Rage 2 (Genesis) - 2 Times
Battletoads (NES) - 2 Times
Doom II (PC) - 4 Times
Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES) - 2 Times
Super Mario World (SNES) - 2 Times

You don't get to exclude Mac and not exclude a dozen other platforms, not for the rationale given. No more of a status symbol than an Odyssey 2, PS3, Virtual Boy, Master System, Vectrex...

Scarab Of Ra (Mac) - ~20 Times

I'm discarding a number of classic NES titles you can finish in under an hour (Kirby's Adventure, anything Mario, etc), as well as all the pre-NES games I've played through multiple times - it is so hard to tell, but when the score rolls over, I consider that a playthrough.

Hmm - that's all way more than me. Only games I play through over and over are games that are meant to be played through over and over - fighting games, Civ games, etc. You'd have to go all the way back to the NES to see me playing through a game over and over (stuff like Galaxy 5000, Contra, and Megaman 2 that I finished more times than I can count).

I'd play a campaign through many times if it was not retarded or felt silly in 95% of the time..
If the game was over the top and did not try to be serious about itself i could enjoy it but when games expect to be taken seriously due to their story i usually lol at their stupid shitty attempts of creating something original an intelligent and play multiplayer.
I find it very hard to play rpgs or fps games in single player if they are linear.
It's almost impossible for me to play rts campaigns since every game is bound by that square(and usually has horrible, unoriginal and childish story)map which for me is a big no no for motivation right away.

Games like UT or civ that are meant to be played many times and have no real storyline are also fine since they are meant to have no storyline on purpose.

In short I have seen very very few games that took their own gameplay and story seriously and were able to deliver and pass my judgment.

I don't re-play games, because any time spent playing a game over again is time not spent playing another game I never played, and there's so many games I wanna play but have not times to already.

Though I finished Tyrian many times over, but I don't think that count.

Its not like that if you dont want it to be... You can just mess around and try doing things in a different way, its not about just the plot, but trying seeing how the game mechanics are made, with some games it can be interesting.

Things like speedruns, can be a good challenge, interesting puzzle even if you knew the game very well.

But usually cRPGs have too slow gameplay for that stuff to interest me, roguelikes are the exception, but they also have 100x deeper gameplay than games more concentrated on plot and graphics...
