"So You Wanna Build A Rocket?"

Post by Sabutai »

Have you ever wanted to build a rocket? A spaceship? Fly around and conquer the galaxy?

Have you ever wondered what the future is going to be like?

http://www.projectrho.com/rocket/index.html

I've been reading this for 2 days straight. Additional info and links would be greatly appreciated.

Discuss :-)

I like the site. It's information isn't actually that far from the truth from the bit I read. The main problem with these ideas is the power source, but there are alot of unproven concepts on that site.

The site has a good amount of information regarding what is and isn't likely to be found on a spaceship. IMO a good reference for those who want to design some space-related models and wants them to be somewhat realistic. For example the 'Space is not an ocean' rule makes any kind of ship with obvious 'top' and 'bottom' sides unrealistic (that includes most of the Star Wars ships), plus some other rule says space fighters aren't realistic as well (at least not in 'deep space', planetary assault is another story), etc.

I dunno. Having an obvious top and bottom still has 1 use: it lets those puny humans who are supposed to fly it be able to tell where their command centre is relative to everything else from an external view. Which on a civi ship, is a good thing. On a war ship, I'd make it a ball and put LOTS of guns and cameras on the outside.

Gief warp-core.

We have pretty much all the other technology required for regular interplanetary travel. Interstellar, well don't know really. Even at near the speed of light it will be slow. Intergalactic? Not without breaking speed of information (Information can't travel faster than light. All evidence to date supports this afaik.), or... well, too much speculation. :-)

Actually the speed of light limit kind of doesn't exist from the point of view of the traveller.

Big or small spaceships seems like an open question to me, considering what balance of defense/offense is like. A small ship might be able to stand up to a large one if both can one-shot each other. There's many reasons spacefighters could be viable, although maybe AI or remote controlled. Reusability for example if you have some valuable exotic engine, instead of throw away missiles. Might be a bigger deal then carrying enough fuel to get back if you have fusion or antimatter drives.
