New Orleans vs Hurricane, Round 2, Fight!
August 2005 - the biggest civil engineering disaster in American history, caused by hurricane Katrina. So how's it going to be this time? I hear Gustav will reach New Orleans tonight, and that it's even bigger than Katrina.
Re: New Orleans vs Hurricane, Round 2, Fight!
Really? what do you really know? what the media told you? Katrina didn't do much past bring water. NO will not get flooded as much as I want it to.
Re: New Orleans vs Hurricane, Round 2, Fight!
It was A LOT of water tough :)
Re: New Orleans vs Hurricane, Round 2, Fight!
Was gonna book flights for a stag party there in december but have to wait a day or two and see how things turn out now ^^

would be nice if that city just got flattened once and for all. Tired of all their bitching and stupidity.
Re: New Orleans vs Hurricane, Round 2, Fight!
I don't think that any of the cool architecture is getting as messed up in this hurricane as it was in Katrina. It's not flooding as much and the levees are fine.
Ship island and the rest of the barrier islands are alright. They stopped a lot of the tidal surge and are not half-flooded like they were in Katrina.
We're under tornado warning over here, but the weather doesn't look all that bad right now.

Hurricanes move fast tough :)
Re: New Orleans vs Hurricane, Round 2, Fight!
It wasn't a good choice to begin with to settle there, but even now they had at least 1 million people living in disaster-prone areas after Katrina. I wonder what's happening with their incomplete levies right now, because it seems like it'd be a total waste of money to continue to rebuild them since their projected completion time is always around 3-4 years, and major hurricanes form in the Gulf more frequently than that nowadays.

"Floods are acts of God; Flood loses are largely acts of man"
Re: New Orleans vs Hurricane, Round 2, Fight!
Lets declare war against god then :)
Being more serious, disasters can indeed be avoided with the correct counter-measures, but getting someone to remember then, let alone actually do anything about it, can be quite hard :)

because the city is under the water level ?tombom wrote:i can't believe nobody has quoted this and asked "what" yetForboding Angel wrote:would be nice if that city just got flattened once and for all. Tired of all their bitching and stupidity.

The Citypart under water level is given up - for good or for bad - don´t know..

Nobody ever asked if it makes simply sense to not rebuilt a City underwaterlevel...

Re: New Orleans vs Hurricane, Round 2, Fight!
You guys should go to Holland ask us/the engineers here, our whole country is below the sealevel, we don't have hurricanes, but we do have alot of anti sea shit/stuff.
Re: New Orleans vs Hurricane, Round 2, Fight!
Oh, yeah, the technology has existed for... like ever. Nobody wants to spend the money on it, though.
And actually, a sufficiently powerful hurricane would put a good amount of Holland under water... not to say the entire country couldn't be made hurricane-proof, just saying it isn't now. Which makes sense, since making Holland hurricane proof would be wicked expensive, and the chances Holland gets hit with that kind of storm are slim to none.

Humanity wont have to make underwater cities...the current ones will sjut be submerged by the oceans.
