Bioshock

Post by Caydr »

Sorry if it's already been done. Now the game's been out for two weeks, what do you guys think? Against my better judgement I bought it off Steam. At least I've seemingly avoided all the copy protection nonsense.

Would you kindly avoid posting unhidden spoilers?
Haw haw haw, been waiting to use that one for two weeks now...

IMO the game was very good but as with all recent FPSs it suffers from the disease known as "ultra detailed enemies = 3 enemies onscreen max = all fights are tiny = no realism.

"Oh a crazy person. ZZap whack. Oh look another one just spawned. Whack. Two this time, my goodness. Oh there's two more. Good thing they don't rush me, I'd have to reload or something."

Aside from the TINY fights, I also found powers to be kind of disappointing. I found no legitimate use for telekinesis aside from the occasional puzzle for 3 extra rounds of pistol ammo or something stupid like that. Reminds me of System Shock.

The vast majority of the powers you don't actively use (like mechanic upgrades, etc) are just level 1/level 2/level 3 upgrades of each other. You can stack them, but when hacking is almost impossible to fail to begin with, do you really need three hacking upgrades?

In interviews, the developers made out as though ammo and supplies would be scarce. By midway through the game I had full ammo of ally types for all my weapons, 9 EVE hypos, 9 health kits, and enough money that I couldn't carry more. I can safely say there could've been half the amount of ammo, hypos, and cash and I'd still have tons to spare.

Enemies don't get bigger and meaner, they just get more HP. On the first level and the last level, you encounter identical enemies, they just have like 9x the hit points...

Even Big Daddies were rather lame imho. You were supposed to nee dto plan "how am I going to take this guy down? First I'll light him on fire, then as he's taking constant damage I'll lure him into these grenades, which are followed by electric traps. Now he's in water, I'll electrocute him and finish him off with RPGs." Er... No, I just shot a bunch of times and occasionally dodged around a corner. I used electricity traps exactly once.

I was also expecting free exploration of a big environment. That's what previews had led me to believe this game was all about, how you'd approach fights from totally different directions and have a different experience every time. No, you're basically on a rail shooter as usual, with the option to explore nooks and crannies for the inevitable health kits and ammo.

They even talked about the game as if the city was leaking, as if you had pressure on you at all times. Maybe if you're not fast enough the area you're in will become underwater! Now that would've been intense. They made a big deal about how the water effects were going to blow us away and then made you have an underwater sequence EXACTLY ONCE, at eh very beginning of the game. How about you put an entire level underwater, forcing us to use weapons that work when submerged?

Were there any stealth segments at all?

An proper "Deus Ex 2", what I was hoping for based on previews, this is not.

Despite all that, I'd still give it 8.5 out of 10 for the pretty good story and pretty fun gameplay.

So... finally I wonder, does anyone know what was actually IN that submarine?

BTW I wasn't playing on easy.

Well, to me, it's Biocrashock.

As soon as I enter neptune's bounty, loading screen finishes = crash to desktop.

Epic.

Truely.

Effing.

Epic.

Other than that, I was fairly pleased with the game.

Sure, it's not difficult at all nor scary for that matter but the game's atmosphere is quite nice, providing for a nice single player experience IMO.

On a side note, what difficulty are you playing under?

I'm playing under medium but even that seems easy :/.

As for your "oh mai I got disappointedz" :

Never believe the hype :P.

P.s You don't escape securom via STEAM - it still gets shoved down your throat me thinks =D.

Yeah, the atmosphere was good, that was the game's best quality for sure.

If you ask me, you paid for the atmosphere, not the gameplay =P.

Bioshock is just step one in games that further push the envelope of player/world interaction.

I found the way the elements work to be quite nice.

Yes but there should've been more of that. There should've been a lot more water and a lot more variety in enemies. I could've done without the random sourceless oil slick every 5 minutes tbh...
No props for my use of would you kindly? You guys don't play right :(

Actually usually theres a red or brown oil barrel nearby that spewn its guts then rolled away from the slick.

I cant get to fort frolic due to a crashbug so i cant read most of the hidden stuff in the thread anyway.

Alright I was just complaining for the sake of complaining about the oil, really... but it should burn up really... not just spontaneously uncombust itself.

The reason I play Bioshock:
Five seconds into the opening sequence, you pull out your present. Attached to the top is a little note. Looking closely, you can just make out a few words, would you kindly?
As far as balance, I just started up a game on hard. By the time I was maybe 8 minutes into the first level, I had 9 health packs and had just found 2 more lying on the ground.
And wtf is with that first pair of little sister and big daddy? You're stuck in place while they walk out, only 5 feet from you, but you can get to their exact position three seconds after they walk through that door, and nothing is there. Heck, you can get in sight of their position nearly instantly.

That was fun. It was fun. It gave me a nice thrill with his horror movie like elements.

And i've had lilke 6 people trying to kill + bots + turrets at once o_O + a big daddy.

I have to admit, that was freaky. FREAKY. Every first ANYTHING scared me. First splicer I was going ' oh shit shit shit shit shit '. First Spider Splicer I was going ' oh mega shit shit shit shit'. First Houdini I was going 'OH FUCK!!'. But then after awhile I relised that they werent FLAME PROOF to my chemical flame thrower.

Boss fights were easy. Big daddy fights were easy. The game was easy, I thought I would have to play smart by planning out battles and rigging security cameras and bots. Oh boy was I wrong; run and gun. Hell you dont even have to use plasmids that often other than maybe enrage and frenzy.

The storyline was okay. It wasnt that awesome. The premise of it was pretty good. The ending(s) fell short.

Should've been more free-roaming IMHO. That, and have mutant mobs of more then 2-4 at a time. I was expecting Dawn of the Dead, I got Doom 3 v2.

I know. XDDD

First big daddy was a hell of a fight though. That was the hardest fight i've ever had in the game. Though I won becuase I jumped over a counter and played chicken.

Edit: telekensis with those trash cans is extremely powerful.

For me, and particularly in Bioshock:

Narrative, atmosphere, and environments >>>>>>>>>>>>> Gameplay

If you are nitpicking on gameplay while ignoring what truly makes Bioshock great you are missing 2/3 of the entire experience. Bioshock doesn't have the best gameplay (its still very good) compared to a number of high profile FPSs, but it exceeded in areas where others fall flat.

Bioshock is a fantastic game, but that said I do have two complaints. Firstly, the vita chambers that revive you almost instantly make the game too easy IMO. Secondly, the the moral dilemma with the little sisters just didn't feel that compelling to me. It might be because I have been reading about it months in advance to getting the game, and as such it wasn't interesting anymore. However, at the same time the dilemma was quite shallow, just offering a binary option of "good and bad" with corresponding "good and bad" endings.

After further playing :

The Good :

The atmosphere : This is easily the part where the game shines, it's also the part of game the devs focused on. I can't say much without revealing massive spoilrarz (and we all know how internets reacts to spoilers).

The plasmid idea : While not exactly the most unique thing since sliced bread, it is nonetheless an interesting part of the game. Sadly, they could've employed this part in better ways to further enhance the atmosphere (I expected the leaves in arcadia to burn D:).

The sound : It's all there, everything that emphasizes on the old 1960s idea of "Science!" not Science. Reminds me of fallout :P.

Graphics : ooooh shiny!

The Bad :

Difficulty level : The genetically-enhanced shooter? More like the mentally handicapped shooter.

The game is WAY, WAY WAY WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too easy. There's tons of health and eve items all over the place and in case you *ever*, *somehow* run short, you can use the tons of money you find to fill yourself up. You don't even need to plan or think ahead at all, you can even ignore all the guns and just use the wrench.

On that note, ammo is also very, very plentiful. Scarce on ammo my ass!

Upping the difficulty level doesn't HALP! either, it merely scales the damage done to you.

The game also holds your hand WAY, WAY too much. Quest arrow? Pah! I can turn that off but then, you still have Vita Chambers =P. No real downside to death, you can just pound daddy with your shotgun, die, run back, shoot 4 more bucks before you die again, repeat until daddy is dead.

The combat : The first five minutes of it is cool, the 10 hours after the 5 minutes are NOT cool.

Combat is like grinding in an MMORPG - no real point and requires no skill at all!

Gets tiresome after a while IMO, with the whole issue of difficulty, they should've just removed combat and take the S out of FPS, would've provided a nicer experience =P.

Ah well, guess I'm too harsh, having grown up in the age of "insanely hard games" like ninja gaiden =P.

Water : "WE HIRED A WATER ARTIST & PROGRAMMAR JUST FOR DIS GAEM LAWL!"

And sadly, they failed to truly use it to excellent effect.

The opening scene was AWESOME but other than that, the water element isn't utilized very much - infact, you'll forget you're even in an underwater city.

NEEDS MOAR WATER USAGE D:!

/ teh end.

MOAR to come, maybe :P.

Epic edit :
