UF Updates Thread

Post by iamacup »

This was posted on the UF forums but i want to get the spring forums view on the idea
I was thinking, there are far to many maps without usefull descriptions and pictures, would you, the users like the ability to "review" maps and at the same time add pictures,

my idea is

A user submits a review, and this is listed underneath the current map information (minimised at first, then expandable if the downloadee clicks on "View user feedback")

then, they can see your review

furthermore, if they like your review (more than the current map information and screenshots) they can vote for it, once a users review gets more than a certain number of votes, their review and pictures become the files default description and pictures (unless the author decides not, in which case they can revert it to their own)

thoughts?

something to note, i would not force user registration to vote on the quality of reviews.
also would it be a good idea if, files with no description would be like wikis (eg files added by filebot or with the description This file was added in a batch process) in that anyone could edit the pics and description.

this will be implemented on how the spring community want/dont want it

edit : The above (or some variation of) will be implemented at some point :)

apart from a review becoming the main description, i like it

the main description should always be by the maker i think, even if it contains no information
you could still see the user reviews if the main one had no info, so that's not a problem

The same structure like for example amazon should be usefull. First the official stuff and than place for reviews. But users must be allowed to add images to the main area, if there are less than six.

Maybee consider some generell picture rules; primary for maps.
I thing every map need an overview and an metalmap picture. This should help reducing useless traffic on the server from downloading maps, only to get disappointed and delete it.
Possibly this to two picture could be generated by the server, if their is an easy way, to do this.

Apart from this, GREAD IDEE

id probally bother to write 2 or 3 sentences when i downloaded a map but you should not need to register.
categories for maps would also be nice (1v1, metalmap, teams of x), best in a way ie Metalheck can be in two categories at the same time (1v1, Metalmap)

Why don't you pull the lobby comments from the lobby map listings?

Since most of the visits to UF.net are before playing the map I cant see myself going back there and finding the map i just played to review it, except maybe if i really liked the map or somehting.

if you just downloaded the map to play it, you probally still have the window open so no problem..

Disallow URLs in reviews. No need for them anyway.

something id like to add that might be good.

instead on voting for the review, use something like, the more reviews a poster posts the higher in the list of reviews he will be.

but instead, how about voting on the map, things like

1-5 - how good is the metal placement
1-5 - how pretty is it
1-5 - how good is it strategically
1-5 - uniqueness

and any others that i havnt thought of.

this'd give the map maker a chance to know where hes going wrong

potential downloaders a good idea of how it plays

and a new way to search/browse UF,
-popular map maker (the map maker with the overall best avg map stats has his/her maps listed first)
-most popular map (most highly rated map listed first)
-best map (highest avg rated map listed first)
-etc etc

competitions between map makers,
xxxx - makes the prettiest maps
xxxx - makes the overall best maps
xxxx - makes the most popular maps
map of the month
map of the day

maybe encourage more people to join the map making community

sorry im jus blurting out my suggestion here.
but i love the review idea

d.r.

Having mapper stats etc (as in who is best blah blah) imo is not a good idea. The mapping community is one of the most calm in spring and it would be nice if it stayed that way. Last thing we need is e-peen competitions between talented mappers. It would be very destructive and what we need to encourage is constructive.
