Maps via Gnutella (Shareaza, Limewire, Bearshare, etc.)

Post by lazorwolf »

Anyone still using Gnutella P2P apps? If so here are some magnet links to my map files to take the load off of the various map servers:

In Shareaza, just go to Tools > Download File/Torrent and paste in one of the magnet links. I personally use Shareaza, but Limewire and Bearshare should support magnet links as well.

In Shareaza you can rate files and leave comments, which is nice.

Who knows, maybe this is a horrible idea, but I was just curious to see if it works.

I think Bittorrent would be a better idea.

This concept fails. Too much effort to achieve, requires additional programmes to work, theres no need for p2p, the current system is faster, you have to move the files...

The current system says "map list not found", it requires to use to browser to navigate obscure mirrors, you have to move the files, ect.

Plus it has the server people whining in /general that the bandwith usage is too high.

has everyone been walking round with their eyes shut.

http://www.unknown-files.net

total bandwidth usage per month = 500 gb

total unused bandwidth per month = 7500 gb (ish)

do the maths.

Bittorrent is the best idea. No doubt about it.

The reason I didn't use bittorrent was because it works best for large files or large packages of files. So a torrent would work for large Map Packs, but those require more work to put together and keep up to date. With Gnutella I just tell it to share my map folder and anytime I download new maps, they're shared automatically.

I know there are some web sites that work just fine, but I just wanted to try out an alternative method. If it worked, there's even a very stable COM version of Gnutella called GnucDNA which could be integrated into the Windows Lobby Client. This way the client doesn't have to point to 1 hard coded URL for map information.

Anyway, like I said, I'm just curious to see if it works. I'm not saying its the best idea ever or that the current system is broken. Just trying something new!

Yes bittorrent is only to be used for large files. Like those map bundles. For single maps any distribution will do, there are alot of free fileshosters around like mentioned above.

here's another one, also accepts ftp upload:

Gnutella can be just as fast. Its just torrents aggregate sources much better (as well as do a better job of encouraging seeding).

But like I said the main reason for using gnutella over torrents is that gnutella will automatically share all of my maps while torrent requires manually creating Torrent files and seeding them and such.

But if you want to try a torrent method, I'd be happy to test it out! Torrents are definitely much more popular than gnutella anymore.

i doubt it would be fast considering most people have like 20 + times the download speed compaired with upload.

especialy in the UK where BT are just shit.....

iamacup wins :P. I'd agree with a BT tracker housing either one large or several small map packages, sorted by author or something IF it wasn't for UF's nearly limitless bandwidths reserves...
