Unit limit 5000, have you ever capped???

Post by Quanto042 »

This is for all of u OTA players out there, have any of you ever capped the 5000 unit limit. Its been a longtime discussion from many of my friends and i that if anyone were to ever max out, that their computer (no matter how awesome) would shit itself. Recently on of them hit 4500 befor the end of an AI skirmish match. Has anyone actually capped?

Please if you have, give details!

I can confirm that my comp shits itself all over with some 500 units if they are builders pouring nano and/or planes.

I just got to 4998 peewee's but realise you mean OTA :s

Here's a screenshot of me destroying a few factories to make room for more units, before realising what the consequences would be :s

It seems like spring crashes whenever you go over 5000. At least for me.

That needs to be made into a load screen.

I was able to smear away the names and mouse icons and give you high res versions of the screens made:

http://lassie.student.utwente.nl/vliet/ ... /krog2.jpg

Also this screen shows some weird lines across the map. It has something to do with pathfinding I think, and it shows up when teher are large amount of units on the map. (also happens on a 4v4 CC game).

Here you can see how wonderfull the game has become, so I dicided to D-gun them all. After that, my team won the game ^.^ (and yes, I was still allive, I even had 2 farks left!)

If you type .cheat the pathfinding and waypoints show up in debug mode, however this means enemy paths show up too, hence why ti only occurs when you type .cheat

Again, nice hi-res screens there, but i was aiming more for actual real world 5000 unit battles just to see if anyone has been able to wage war with all 5000. A true sense of epic warfare don't ya know.

I guess spring needs bigger maps tho in order to truely pull it off.

5000 in game units is acheivable with a fairly decent comp or 4998 atleat (crashes whenever i try to go over that number for me) but playing an actual battle with that many units won't really work, the slow down is just horrible - and i have a pretty powerful machine.

With all setting on full, my cpu usage is hovers around the 65% mark, thats with an athlon64 x-2 duel core 4.4ghz. The biggest slowdown however is dealing with the polygons (i think). hovering around 5000 units for me, brings my fps down into single digits, and again thats with a very nice graphics card (Geeforce 7800 GTX). navigating the map with just my own motionless units is a pain in the arse already, never mind adding in an opponents units, the explosions, and having to scale down to someone elses lower spec hardware :P
