I resent warlord's lack of effort and wafer thin excuses about not fixing it. So I find myself very much not wanting to help get it running. Last time the effort was brought up, he started moving the goal post.

I don't have much of an opinion on the project itself (since i've never played it), it's timeline (i've been guilty of vaporware too) or even the legality of the assets. In hindsight i shouldn't have brought any of that up.

My objection is simply that the banners and game page links generate interest in something unobtainable thereby leading new visitors directly into a dead end. It's basically a cruel joke with the added insult of telling people they can't play because they aren't a member of an exclusive club (and they can't join the club because they are new)

It's pretty much the antithesis of open source.

I asked that the gundam banner be pulled and no one did it.

hell I would be happy if my title was just content developer and not gundam developer. I have always maintained that I put time on too many non-gundam things to count as only that.

Although I myself was never deemed worthy of involvement, I had ample opportunity thrusted upon me, despite making no effort to procure it, and so did others. Little in this community is ever kept 'secret' or behind 'closed doors' for long, as I myself have demonstrated with my own projects.
How is that relevant to advertising the game to newcomers who enter this site?

@flozi, most of what I say is directed at zinj, gnome has always been a good guy, but he is part of the dev team so he takes some of the heat. *shrug*

Iirc I still have access to the source, but I don't have it downloaded. The paranoia was thick enough to the point that I was a little concerned that if evo used anything that might be considered to have been derived from SW (regardless of the fact that i never would - the accusation would be damaging enough in and of itself), a huge bs shitstorm might ensue, so I did some work, then promptly deleted it.

I don't think that the sw guys are that kind of jerks, but you have to be really careful around ultra paranoid people cause they will turn on you instantly.

All of this irritates me to think about because all us content devs wanted to do was help sw get to a point where they could make a release, and zinj was too damn thick to understand that rapid releases were tied to svn so they could bugfix immediately instead of trying to have huge publicity releases.

I have so much more to say on the subject but I've typed this all on my phone so far, so I'll niinja edit from my desktop.

On second thought, I've said enough. I would be surprised if most of us didn't resent Zinj in one way or another for taking all our help and then just bailing on the entire community. That's not cool.

My response had nothing to do with that. Please learn basic comprehension.

Regarding the Notajoke posts, they appear twice because when the blog post is published, it's also uploaded to springfiles despite my protest, because it's claimed that it's a good method of backup.

It's to this that I point out that everything on springinfo is on springinfo. While clicking on the articles links offsite to the original, I have copies of all content and images mirrored. Should any site go down, or moddb projects be deleted I have copies.

And +1 to SpliFF, I've argued the point that it's misleading in the past. Smoths wishes should also be fulfilled, if not for the same reason, but because he demands it.

Starwars and gundam shouldn't be forgotten, but we shouldn't tout them to newcomers who will expect to play them.

A final note

When posts are pulled in, I'm assigned as the author. However, there's nothing stopping people from claiming ownership of their posts. This would let them curate or ammend any such items should they accidentally post something, or add their own.

So far only Forboding Angel has made such an effort.

All that's needed is to register an account. From then on the automation can assign posts to your account with no effort on your part. Should you wish, you can sign in and modify your own posts.

Forb, at this point we wouldn't flip shit if you used any of our code (if any of it still works). At least I wouldn't and I was responsible for a lot of it, and I'm pretty sure all the scripts we got from KDR were PD licensed anyway. The story would be different if you ripped art assets (mainly models, not to worried about other stuff) but only with Zsinj and Lynx, not so much with me. For the record, we shared quite a bit of code with S44 back in the day, but I have no idea how much of it they still use.

I'm not really asking you guys to fix it for us, but if one of you with svn access loads it up and tells me it works, or it would work with a couple hours of simple bugfixing, then I could most likely get Zsinj to agree to release the beta stuff and I might be able to find some time to do the bugfixing after Christmas. And after that, who knows?

I don't need any of it. My point was that if I implemented something in Evo that was similar to something in SW, even though coming up with it independently, by having the SW source lying around I become possibly subject to baseless accusations which would be damaging enough in an of themselves, just because they were made.

There is a rule in business: You don't do business with crazy people. Paranoid people (not you Gnome) are crazy, ergo, don't do business with them because no good deed will go unpunished.

I still have access. I'm dling it now. Will let you know if it works.

Works. Some stuff is broken (like speeder bikes... seriously, who scripted those? O_o) but the stuff that is broken should be pretty easy to fix.

It needs one of the chili build menus implemented -stat-. But yeah, it's still is pretty ok-ish shape.

Ok. I might try to mess with it this weekend and see whats up. I'd like to put out a semi-public beta build and hopefully have a few games played online to try to catch any major bugs. Then we'll go from there.

I dont know who last touched the speeder. It used those weird custom flight tags. Thats relatively minor though. I'm mainly looking for show stoppers. I'm worried about things like the flag code and upgrades/morphs and the droideka script and infantry's use of bos set max speed and so on. You can get lost in all the minor balance issues caused by unit handling and pathfinding and other changes way too quickly for the scope of what I want to do.

I know you probably don't know my name at all or anything, but I would be more than willing do some grunt work, such as setting it up with chili UI. I spent A Lot of my teenage years playing SWTA when it came out and would love to see it (or what its become) up and running again.

It's already running chili. However, it isn't using any chillified build menu nor chillified minimap.

The speeder functions... sort of. It can't turn. I would suggest not using the extra aircraft tags as they are more trouble than they're worth. Setting the speeder as a normal fighter with loopback disabled should more or less preserve the wanted behavior.

Oh, in it's weapondef be sure to set turret = false, and you might want to check it's firepoint as it doesn't seem to be shooting form the correct place (but I didn't look closely).

The lua for the points and all that junk works fine. There are lua errors, but they are minor.

I'd be happy to lend a hand -- I posted on the IW forums back in Jan/Feb about being willing to do what was needed to get it running/taking care of issues emerging with a release if Zsinj could commit to being around to play games for a few weeks, but he couldn't get spring working (and his laptop died), so it fizzled. At the time it ran fine with the exception of some goofy speeders, bothan commandos being able to spawn from far away, and some inconsequential texture errors.

Also, yeah, pretty sure some IW code is still in S44 - your corpse cleaner and Maelstrom's squad spawner at minimum.

For the record, I'm 99% sure we put this type of thing in place in conjunction with adding the game development forums, so you just got the title that identified you as in charge of a specific sub forum.

I'm gonna change this for you now though :P

[edit] I'd prefer to keep the gundam banner just because it's pretty and historical... I can pull it if you'd really like however.

We will need somewhere on the site for archiving old mothballed unavailable and dead games so that they've their own place but aren't forgotten. Perhaps this would be a solution for the Starwars and P.U.R.E graphics amongst others. Perhaps "cold storage" would be a good name

Already exists: http://springrts.com/wiki/Category:Historical
Not that pretty but some active projects do not have a page, why would anyone spend time on something dead, especially if the makers want it gone.

For IW and recent spring version, it will break for the same reasons as all other mods did. So there were threads about all that, some are collected here:
