A talk is unlikely to change my opinion even if I had the time to look into such, but use may, and I'm using git for a particular project at this point so my stance may change.

summary: svn is really slow and centralized, git is really fast, powerful, and decentralized.

I prefer svn too, exactly because its centralized :)
And I don't think its slow..
It has easier to use tools (for windows at least), its easier to setup and use and has nicer revision numbers :)

For personal projects git is actually easier to set up. No need to bother with servers or separate checkout dir and repository dir or whatever. (Just start git gui [right click on folder -> git gui] and click create new repository and you're done.)

You'll find SVN is slow once you've used git a bit more IMO :-) (Though for those measuring SVN speed just from SF; the SF SVN implementation is quite sucky and slow AFAIK.)

Only thing I agree with are the revision numbers, and a little bit the tools, though in my experience git gui and gitk are good enough for 95% of the things I do with git (I remember only git revert and git blame to be really missing).

Another (big) disadvantage IMO is that git devs are quite stubborn... for example git doesn't support UTF-8 filenames on Windows (actually, it considers filenames on any platform just as a stream of bytes, making repos incompatible between platforms with incompatible encodings ...), and some git devs seem to be of opinion "great if you fix it, but if it makes things even a tiny bit slower for Linux users, then we will never ever merge it". (This issue makes me unable to use git svn at work.)

Well, it's not really that generous on my part, since it is the funds from the old Spring paypal donation account. :)

Most humorously, that came out of my food money. Again. I do my job and I earn my way, and I'm still saving day by day.
