# of people playing/downloaded?

Post by Kinection »

I'm wondering if there is someway to keep track the number of downloads of TASpring there have been and how many people are currently playing Spring?

Some statistics like that woudl be interesting. To show how Spring grows over time.

I'm not sure if it's possible though, since the distrubition is over bittorrent and not quite sure how the networking of taspring works.

Well, FileUniverse tracks downloads. There are about 3400 downloads from FU alone. Also, if you will recall, you have to register a name the first time you go to the lobby, so I'm sure it'd be easy for the SYs to get the number of total register names...

Well, I was thinking about the current number of people playing and stuff. It'd be cool to get some stats on the front page.

Tough to rank with so many mods.

Are you #1 with AA or XTA or what?

You can't be #1 overall if you're not #1 using ALL possible mods in use.

I'm against ranking :) can you tell? :D

What about a forum-style ranking at first, just based on wins or even games played?

It could go: conscript, irregular, green, blooded, regular, hardened, veteran, campaigner, Immortal, God of War.....

I reckon forget about ranking for at least six months. When we can confidenlty say "this is a solid game - nice gui, not too buggy, free of any cavedog units, good mod/map management/download" then we can start discussing a ranking system (and advertising... I was thinking maybe we can create an article for megagames, that's bound to get the attention of thousands.)

Ranking is terrible. It just creates class divisions between players.

But this isn't really what the topic is about...

I disagree. Skill based ranking makes it much easier to have balance, good and generally fun matches between strangers.

Yep, and automatching. Without automatching, people who are new can't really get into the game.

Automatching won't ever work, there will never be enough players.

Ya, you would need an agressive advertising campaign....but that can't start until this game is free from top to bottom.

And, since it is open source, it might attract some attention from some of those groups (but of course, it needs to be free). I don't plan on implimenting auto-matchmaking until the game is completely free.
