Re: Keep Spring engine usable by all

This could mean that eventually official Spring will lose 3do models support, too. This would hit basically all spring games that still have a playerbase. Actually no. Converting 3dos to s3os already is and was for years possible via Upspring. I tried this years ago and it did work just fine so the...

Re: Keep 3do model support

300 fps Techa 3do vs 50fps BAR s3o Techa converted BAR models to 3do and they run magnitudes faster I cannot confirm the performance difference. Tested with the current status of my Maximum Annihilation mod in 105 with the Goliath s3o model vs a respective 3do conversion (i.e. the geometry thrown i...

Re: Keep 3do model support

Best is to have it detect automatically, let people pick between s3o or 3do or keep both if you want more developers. Techa converted s3o models to 3do and 3do runs faster. I think it's not a good idea to stick to a method made for computers from 1997 with 3D rendering meant for the early 2000 era....

Re: Keep 3do model support

hmm..isn't the next engine version going to be based off of the BAR fork? From what you can read about the future development e.g. in the "end of maintenance branch" topic it sort of seems that way. While the engine definitely could use some modernization and deprecation of outdated rende...

Re: bitcoin in 2021

I guess you'd need some states backing such a currency in order to give it momentum as a means of payment. On the other hand this to some extent is what the current cryptocurrencies were established against so this feel a bit like you can't have the good from both worlds...

Re: bitcoin in 2021

Well it is even more "sad" if you plan buying a new GPU in the foreseeable future... Personally Bitcoin etc. is still like an Enigma to me. Yes you know what it is and you hear about it but I have no clue on how to use it in any meaningful way so there might be some truth to zwzsg's...

Re: Wiki Update

You might have seen that I'm slowly replacing the Lua wiki pages with the new anchored template while correcting minor issues. I'd now like to hear some opinions on very old callouts / syntax. There are quite some functions which have been reworked / replaced over the years. Currently the wiki conta...

Re: Physically Based Rendering

And another possibly "stupid" question: Are flat polygons being rendered double-sided? So when for example doing the blades of a windmill as just one flat polygon, would both sides of the blade be rendered just fine or will this lead to problems as the face has just one normal?

Re: great discussion on ballance.

I stuck with mathematical balance for the most part on MF. I use it to assign costs automatically for most units. Imo it's the only reliable way to get consistent balance between lots of units without lots of player feedback. Don't expect it to produce "perfect" balance (there's no such t...

Re: great discussion on ballance.

Nice find - thanks for sharing! :-) I also agree that what they call a chess like "mechanical balance" actually isn't achievable no matter how hard you try. Plus for the majority of Spring games we are creating RTS games which add like a whole new world of complexity and mechanics to the m...

massively toxic community from the *a players. WIth that not being an exclusivity to *A focused guys. I still vividly remember the flak I got when presenting Maximum Annihilation - I actually had a look at the old topics a few weeks ago and while moderation did remove the worst parts, the instant d...

Allright - I'll keep the bracket style the way it is then and will start adapting the callout pages in the proposed structure.

Re: Wiki Update

Basically yes, but actually no... I got the brackets to sort of work but in order to make it work reliably I added two additional templates: {{bracket}} {{rbracket}} One creates brackets around a text or just the left bracket, the other creates just a right bracket. This works fine but I f...

Re: Physically Based Rendering

Yes - even when you could alter the draw order in a way that the unit is drawn after the map this of course then only would work in the standard top-down view i.e. when using a free camera which looks around at low altitude the unit easily could be drawn through mountains which should block the view...
