Re: Engine Testing - 99.0-RC5

Is this the right place to ask about what the new camera is ought to improve on? The primary difference I can notice is the zooming behaviour, but the zooming behaviour in the old default camera is the exact one we (or, at least, I) expect in almost any game. I, of course, applaud the effort of maki...

Re: Engine Testing - 99.0-RC5

To open up my camera issue a little; I've gotten very accustomed to move the camera by zooming out and zooming in to new spot I want to go to (or quick keying around) as this also gives me a good overview of what is going on in the whole map. In the 706 build, doing this isn't possible, as the.. Um,...

Re: Engine Testing - 99.0-RC5

Assuming it's 98.0.1-706-gaa3e0e2, I played for a little while and found no obvious bugs. Vehicles didn't get stuck to a lab even once thus far. I'm not sure if I like the new camera though. To move around the map effectively, it requires middle mouse key to be pressed down, which I don't personally...

Re: Changing Spring engine version

So this implies that I should keep a separately installed SPADS version for non-lobby default Spring engine versions? I was hoping I could neatly have just one installed SPADS, but I suppose this'll have to do, then. ^^

Changing Spring engine version

Heya, I tried to set up a PrincessHost for Spring engine testing. Figuring it'd be as easy as to change the "springServer" variable, I tried that -- But SpringLobby still reports the engine in use as 0.98, even though I've double-checked that the Spring binaries behind springServer path ar...

Re: 1v1 BA tourney interest check!

Please put out date inputs soon, I'll try to decide it during the upcoming weekend. :-) On a loosely related note, I've been thinking about what the map pool and default maps will be like.. I think we'll have a bit of focus on the small-to-medium maps and forsake some classic very tiny maps, since g...

Re: Configuration variables for the various path optimizations

Splitting slopeMod would affect unit movement in all situations and introduce other pathfinding complaints. Shouldn't the decision of using or not using slopeMod (and, I'd like to imagine, a treshold) be up to the game domain rather than Spring domain? For games with units with slow'ish acceleratio...

Re: Configuration variables for the various path optimizations

A per-unit threshold is impossible for the way pathfinding is currently set up. The pathfinder does not know that units exist, it only knows that movedefs exist. It is inadvisable to have many movedefs. Mmh, but wouldn't having multiple MoveClass tags be a non-issue? Right now there's 4 if I read t...

Re: Configuration variables for the various path optimizations

Yeah, I was thinking something very similar in the morning while contemplating if getting up to work at all is a good idea or if I just should stay sleeping. I succumbed to getting up, eventually, as can be seen. Aside of a modifier to slope cost, I think there should also be a per-unit treshold. I....

More seriously though, would there be a potential for big harm done if a system like this was tried?

Re: gathering feedback about people who leave spring ecossystem

The first 6 videos on the evo steam page are tutorials on how to play. There is even a dedicated section on the website. Sadly, I have no way to play videos ingame. http://www.evolutionrts.info/video-tutorials/ Yeah, but it's an era where people are used to clicking "Quick match" and have...

Re: gathering feedback about people who leave spring ecossystem

I think no feedback needed. What is really needed is good tutorials shipped with spring somehow. Not somewhere on site or in separate document formed as manual. It's not unrealistic to have both. ;-) But yes, it seems strikingly obvious that the lobbies and the learning curve are the major blockers...

Re: Merit

I applaud this initiative. A lot of open source projects and game communities lack systems like these, and if it gets to be about hundreds of players, it's just not sustainable to be as chaotic as Spring community sometimes is. However, I echo the concern of gajop in that systems like these get obso...

Re: 1v1 BA tourney interest check!

Thinking about date.

How would either 14th or 28th June fit people? Both are Sundays, 2 and 4 weeks from now respectively. Sometime in late afternoon in Europe, morning in east coast US.

Re: DSD or big games discussion

I would dare to claim that ending the game in T1 in 8v8 DSD wouldn't be particularly rare if all the players in both teams were high-skilled and cooperated excellently. And far as I can tell, there's been no particularly game-changing balance changes to land units in BA for years now?

By the way! If there are particular weekends that are an absolute no-go for you, please put them here. Currently I'm thinking of the later 3 weekends of Jule, i.e. at earliest 2 weeks from now, latest 4 weeks from now. :-)

Re: 1v1 BA tourney interest check!

Well, right now, we're just mapping out people who'd potentially want to play. :-) If we can get 6 people who have even theoretical interest, then we can discuss about the time and dates and when one is set up, I'll handle the rest. All you guys need to do is to enter your name to a web form once th...

Re: Configuration variables for the various path optimizations

Yeah, I know it's old news, but I do believe that while making it - or really, almost any system - perfect would be not only impossible but potentially a huge waste of effort, once in a while there can still be an idea or two that let the state of affairs take a step closer to optimal. No need to ma...

Re: DSD or big games discussion

I'm not fully sure if this is necessarily a good approach. It's my belief that majority of the spectators on BlackHoleHost are really there just to socialize. They aren't going to play. They just want to chat with other people and check a few games. Autolocking or limiting spec amount is not a solu...

Re: DSD or big games discussion

Sure, DSD is very different from your 3v3 CCR, but it isn't necessarily worse. It just is what it is. When I look at a typical 8v8 DSD match, I can see a few things that probably appeal to people well. For one, it's less micromanaging heavy. Failing a few time-critical moments is not necessarily a ...
