Re: C&C:RA3 or ST2
SC2 first, but I'm sure I'll play both eventually. Both excellent franchises, neither infallible, but overall Blizzard is the better dev house.

Deserts and sand dunes also have sand... but yeah, unless your map has sand on it, you can't get it (not even from the trade depot).

Stone blocks are carved from raw stone at a mason's workshop. They can be used to build higher quality stuff, and some things (like pumps and wells) require them instead of raw stone.

Magnetite is an iron ore - get some smelted and you can make some iron and steel, perfect for weapons and armor. Platinum isn't useful for weapons or armor, but it's very high value, so some platinum statues or furniture are a great way to increase the value of a room.

Perhaps his backstory includes some catastrophic... thingy... or other period of retrograde tech development. Otherwise, yeah, I would expect more from something developed in the far future than the same thing we have today with slightly more nimble missiles.

Other excellent pre-military skills that train relatively quickly and hassle-free are bookkeeping and seige operating. I usually build a few catapults firing into an ammo-saver just to give my dwarves something else to bulk up on.

Soon they will be introduced to the ways of naked dwarf wrestling... Actually, especially if you've pumped up their stats, naked dwarves are pretty likely to give each other spinal injuries, which never heal, when wrestling naked. It's much safer to give them armor and shields. That way, you are al...

In -REALLY REALLY OLD- versions (like, earlier than the 2d version boatmurdered was based on) there were many more nobles from different noble houses, including one from House Rash, that was somehow associated with undead, and would bring your dead to life to attack your fortress if you pissed on th...

They'd need to be recompiled, and none have so far. I bet something like a LUA AI would be easier to port.

In the most recent version, dwarves have started to complain if they eat the same shit day after day. Of course, this is only a very minor penalty right now.

Anvils are super cheap, you can really drop the starting one to free up mad cash. I usually bring it anyway since I usually end up with so many points I don't know what else to spend them on.
Def. max out all your starting dwarves skills though.

Re: DWARF FORTRESS
Dwarves don't pick tasks. Tasks pick dwarves. So it's sort of a weird implementation.
The Coma problem was caused by sleep not decreasing the "drowsiness" count for the dwarf.
