Re: Fallout 3
Trust me, if you wanted to do minimal leveling and go straight to San Fran, you had to do some silly stuff. My favorite was the build for Fallout 1 where you boost your starting HP as far as you can go and pick up some tech skills and then deliberately get captured by the Super Mutants. You could a...

Re: Fallout 3
Fallout was a very, very hardcore game, in its way, and quite difficult if you weren't willing to think about stuff and do a lot of twinkie, tac-gamer crap. I'd hardly call "pick up a gun and use it to shoot people" twinkie, and that's really all you had to do to beat either of the first ...

Until this thread I had no idea Bioshock was at any way related to the old System Shock games.

Re: Fallout 3
You guys are gonna hate me for this, but I like Fallout Tactics a lot better than Fallout 2, and was disappointed when they scrubbed Tactics from the continuity.

Re: Starcraft 2 split into three games???
I buy RTS's for the single player campaign. Really, I don't give a shit about multiplayer. So long as each box has a single player campaign about as long as all three campaigns from SC1 or BW, I will quite happily purchase and play all 3 (Yes, that is 150$ I am totally willing to spend.) and am real...

Re: What are you doing with your money?
Honestly, I haven't been out on my own working long enough to have any investments this is hitting - my position is actually getting comparatively better as everyone else falls. My parents got hit hard though - retired, so they lived on pension and investments. Right now, my money is just in a savin...

Re: P.U.R.E. 0.8 RC3
Argh- Congratulations on this, it's very exciting. Your team has done some quality work here. Unfortunately - I do have a bug, happily a resolvable one. Crash during "creating sky", "Could not read water texture from file maps/water.jpg" 100% reliable - and totally solvable by pl...

Re: P.U.R.E. 0.55
I can see, based on how the winglets flip over when parked (which is cool) how you sort of did a bottom-grey, top-green thing, but honestly, since you'll mostly just be seeing the top, I'd swap that up a bit. The engines would look nice grey, IMO, and the big grey blocks would be a nice visual clue ...

Re: DWARF FORTRESS
Traps will always be way more time and energy efficient than a military. Yes, a good military can and will protect you from most anything, but it will take years of work and massive amounts of high value metals. Traps, meanwhile, are dirt cheap, and you can put up enough to make you completely invul...

Re: New Orleans vs Hurricane, Round 2, Fight!
Oh, yeah, the technology has existed for... like ever. Nobody wants to spend the money on it, though. And actually, a sufficiently powerful hurricane would put a good amount of Holland under water... not to say the entire country couldn't be made hurricane-proof, just saying it isn't now. Which make...

Re: Google Chrome
Hm. Faster than ff3 on my machine... mem footprint is very nice... love the encapsulation (if one tab crashes or hangs, it doesn't affect the whole browser)... if those three were the only consideration I would switch browsers now, but a lot of the little details are annoying me... - no middle click...

Re: DWARF FORTRESS
Im not even sure they can fire back up either. They can, but the check to shoot through a fortification depends on how close you are too it (IE, it's easy to stand next a fortification and shoot through but very hard to shoot through from a distance) and the height above ground of the tower means t...

Re: DWARF FORTRESS
Demons don't "come" to your fortress naturally. One specific thing needs to happen, but I don't want to spoil the surprise if you don't know what it is.

Re: DWARF FORTRESS
The two big bugfixes, for me at least, are that the mouse works over the whole screen even if you've resized it now, and dwarves now prefer to combine seeds in one bag instead of getting a dozen bags and putting one seed in each.

Re: Burn the rope
Haha, we discovered this at the office a few months ago. Try to beat it without burning the rope - it regens faster the lower it's health gets. I got to about 50% health, couldn't do better.

Re: DWARF FORTRESS
Vermin also eat your food, but I find that crops last so long it doesn't matter (you'll use them before they spoil, so long as you have them on a stockpile). It's mostly meat that rats will ruin, so make sure you put meat and fish into barrels, or cook them.

Re: DWARF FORTRESS
Chunks just rot, they can't be used for anything. Goblins use the pathfinding algorithm, so they can't be "tricked" like you describe. They don't, however, avoid traps once one of them gets picked off, so if you make a hallway lined with traps they'll all just stupidly charge down the same...
