Re: Making heightmaps with World Machine
i immediately run four sequential gaussian blurs of high power You may already know this, but the mathematics of the gaussian blur dictate that multiple applications of the blur filter yield exactly the same results as a single application of the filter with a higher blur radius. Of course you'd ha...

Re: mapping in blender. easiest way to map yet.
I want to be bale to place units and see where each one can pass while making the heightmap. You can sortof accomplish this using my HeightMapTweak program. It will provide a color-coded overlay of your height map indicating slopes. You have to manually configure the slopes, though - it doesn't kno...

Lua idea - budgeting
This is an idea I had, and I don't know if it's even possible with Lua... but I think it could reduce the micromanagement of building econ considerably and add a lot to the strategy element of the game. Basically, I would like to have a widget/system which allows you to manage the stuff you're build...

Here are some unit ideas to get you started: 1) Guys with knives 2) Really talented guys with knives 3) Sandworms, which have knives for teeth. Seriously. 4) Duncan Idaho, gets reborn every time he dies 5) Civilians. They don't fight, but they breed like rabbits and eventually morph into guys with k...

Re: Clan stack issue
Proposal: Rank based on damage dealt to immobile targets . Granted, this wouldn't work for all mods. But for most traditional mods (i.e. anything with static factories/resource extractors) it gives a good picture of a player's ability to kill the enemy. Porcing won't help you, since you won't be kil...

Re: Fog of war?
It's full 3D, has fog of war and it updates very quickly. So I guess it IS possible to implement, maybe it can be done in the future... They might be using a visual trick to give the impression that the fog of war is being updated more quickly than it really is. For example, they might be drawing t...

Re: trackball vs mouse
I also use that same model Logitech trackman. I switched to a trackball at work when 12+ hours of computer use per day (no, not all at work) was causing wrist pain. The pain is all gone now, but I still use a mouse at home for gaming.

Re: Overclocking Woes
Just be aware that heat is not the only problem caused by overclocking. You also increase the probability of bit errors, which can cause all sorts of instability and odd behavior. Bit errors can occur at any temperature if you're heavily overclocking, so if you want a stable system then you can't re...

Re: mp3>midi
I haven't tried this application, but the title sounds like what you're looking for. I suspect that it doesn't work well for most musical instruments but since your file is just piano it might be worth a try. Audio to midi converter You'll also need to download Octave since the converter is apparent...

Re: FPS LAN game suggestions
Try Tremulous . It's based on the GPL'd Quake 3 engine. From the web-site: Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. One team is humans (they use guns) and the other team is the aliens (they use mostly melee attacks). The goal is to kill the enemy ba...

Re: US Financial Crisis SOLVED!
Sorry, but there are several reasons why that wouldn't work. First of all, the majority of mortgages in the U.S. are not currently in danger of foreclosure. If the government decided to pay $6000 towards all of these mortgages then it really wouldn't help the economy much. Why? 1) The majority of th...

[ ] Global economic meltdown Yeah, the press makes the current meltdown sound pretty bad... but it needs to get a lot worse before I'd call it apocalypse-worthy. [ ] Unified world government The EU is a good start, but it's not apocalypse-worthy just yet. We'll need to see Asian, American, and possi...

Re: What is the cause of perspective warping in games?
I'm confused. Fov 85-90 is supposed to be non warptastic right? I've never noticed source, or cod4, or nexuiz, or any of that crap warping. WtFork? It's possible that their engine implicitly doubles the FOV. For example, in the Quake series of games, setting the FOV to 90 means that the entire fiel...

Re: What is the cause of perspective warping in games?
Most FPS games use a 90 degree field of view. The optimal value is usually a little less than 90, but depends on your monitor size and how close you sit to the monitor. Many hardcore gamers prever higher FOV's. There is a slight competitive advantage since you can see more to the side. I know severa...

Re: Secret Maryo Cronicles
It's fun. Some of the levels are infuriatingly difficult. It's disappointing that the game doesn't have a proper end yet. There's no boss and nothing resembling a finale. You just get to a certain point and there aren't any more levels.

There is one exception. Players who are crazy enough to embark on a glacier can use magma to melt the ice. Magma will melt any ice in the level above, providing you with precious water for irrigation. You can heat things with magma, just there isn't really a good reason for heating things

Re: Strangely blurry map.
Have you noticed the same blurry phenomenon on other maps? If not, I suspect that the mipmaps for metal heck were generated poorly. IIRC mipmap generation is part of the map compiling process, and there'd be no way to fix it without recompiling the map (which would break compatibility with the exist...

I just updated from 0.77b4 to 0.77b5. The installer deleted my old springsettings.exe and did not provide a replacement. I no longer have any method of changing my settings. Also, it looks like the SpringDownloader application was also deleted. I receive the following error message when starting TAS...
