Re: Moderation is best in moderation (split)
Felonies, unless particularly egregious, do not result in an automatic ban but they are generally supposed to result in an warning. Misdemeanors may result in changes to a post, but may not warrant an explicit warning. Warnings accumulate to meet a minimum threshold for bans, which is intended to pr...

Re: Spring developer crisis
A discussion like this could actually be a positive step, because it raises the topic, and thus raises awareness. If we laid out what is being worked on and what current developers feel could use work, that could provide interested parties with the hook necessary to get involved. Mentorship is anoth...

Re: Spring developer crisis
I would say that the place to start is with personal contacts and previous resources; not all Spring developers have lapsed due to disinterest, and their circumstances may have changed. Who knows what might reignite the spark? I agree that GSoC has not worked, and perhaps the efforts put into GSoC h...

Re: Game engine language
I thought much the same, but my memories from the period are not in focus. That point did come up a few times, but I don't know what the details were. Perhaps it was about the APIs for Native AI support in various languages, or a specific component they wanted to build separately, I really do not re...

Re: Poll: Is a game with more units better?
I remember very, very little about OSRTS except that it was ambitious. I believe JC didn't have the time necessary to commit to it, but I don't want to overreach my memory on this topic. I will say that I believe there was no consensus on the language to use, and with a small developer base this sta...

Those aren't used (in general) because they are not optimal and in many cases superceded by other units in large team games. At least, this was the case for 2009 - 2011.

Re: Poll: Is a game with more units better?
Not necessarily, the nature of the game and the condition of the game state determine the answer to this question. This does not appear to be a serious question, of course.

TASClient still works? afaik its unmaintained. also the bug-tracker isn't used since ages, so i wonder why there are still TASClient users... We've been amused by this for years, even before ZK took off there was little reason to use TASClient but there were some very vocal folks who continued to a...

Re: "Playing SimCity"
If you're going to have an AI, why implement it at all rather than either folding the role into the player's or phoning it in and modeling the end consequences for the player without simulating the means and methods? That said, the role should not be boring for at least some segment of players, othe...

Re: Screamer and Mercury are still shit
Players are nothing if not adaptive, options which have no utility will eventually age out of play. I stopped playing BA a long time ago, I stopped using the Mercury and Screamer years before that for the most part, with the exception of situations in which I wanted to provoke a land strike or confu...

As of some arbitrary and recent date. I can still run Spring - and nearly all games - on my 8800GT or my 275GTX, neither of which have HDMI out.

Of course, then you might want to reprice the Juno and the Jammers, which is not necessarily a bad thing, you're just shaking up a segment of play.

First, for any assignment of value there are innumerable circumstances in which that assignment is invalid. This is not limited to formal currency. Second, we can say exceedingly little about the behaviour of prehistoric creatures, and even less about their psychology. Third, evolution does not inve...

Re: Spring dev must honor backward compatibility! plsss
In open source, as in business, you are often faced with the choice between advancement and support. The longer you delay advancement in favour of support, the harder it becomes to achieve the former and the more painful your eventual transition from the latter becomes. In many cases it is better fo...

Of course, instead you had a core of flexible players who would migrate across different games based on opportunity for an enjoyable experience; Flopflop, Godde, Saktoth, Google being surviving examples. I don't think anybody traded horses to get a match of their particular game.

Re: "Playing SimCity"
You allow them to tweak the plans. Foster communication between the players, run it as a dual-personality coop game. Most coop games appeal to a variety of personalities, the moment you put in a dedicated support type, you create another user persona.
