Re: Texture distance recognition

Notice that this is a theoretical discussion of how to make things look good, not about specific practical stuff. It might be a good idea to divide the mesh into different areas of low frequency color at the start of texturing, and then adding in details, instead of using an uniform base and just pu...

Re: Random WIP

Yeah, I probably should, altogh edge loop theory is like a whole science in itself that I don't want to deal with yet. I focused more on making a quick model with few polygons for a proof of concept. But having good edge loop structure would have helped a ton when refining the mesh too. I'll see wha...

If you have a ton of little UV areas you might consider making some generic texture areas (dirt, metal, panels etc) and just putting them there.

Re: Thoughts on the financial crisis - IS THE WORLD ENDING?

It isn't borrowed money from other countries that was spent on whatever, it's just political promises which is something completely different. Of course the future "promised" social care will be huge, but you can't really equate it to debt. That would be like counting all the Christmas pre...

Re: Thoughts on the financial crisis - IS THE WORLD ENDING?

Not really, read the next segment: Unfunded promises made for Medicare, Social Security and federal retirement programs account for 85% of taxpayer liabilities. State and local government retirement plans account for much of the rest. Basically, this is just saying that government funded retirement ...

Some progress in trying to normalmap with blender, it's a bit sketchy but seems doable:

Re: Why Do Traditional Rts In The New Millennia Suck?

Yeah I'm hoping that TW empire will turn around the trend of TW getting worse gameplaywise for each iteration. The naval stuff seems really cool.

Re: Why Do Traditional Rts In The New Millennia Suck?

Starcraft isn't just about it's gameplay but where the players took it also. The players have made the game to what it is during the years just as much as blizzard.

Re: Why Do Traditional Rts In The New Millennia Suck?

The upkeep makes perfect sense as a way to give the player with less army some kind of advantage to try and balance it out. About heroes, what's an army without a leader? It's nice to have some variety in games, not every game has to be about spamming econ and then mass producing units at the right ...

Re: Dark Reign mod. help wanted

Heh, calm down guys, I have it almost set up for some basic use, I'm working on an example model atm. It may not be the end all solution but will definitely get things going. The great thing with a script is that it will be easy to get going, you don't have to think of all the ramifications like wit...

Re: Random WIP

For my first unit to try out my new model format lua script I just felt like making a hormagaunt (zergling). Seems like blender is getting pretty nice, the ambient bake seen here for example. Blender should also work out well for making the normal maps, seems like they just sorted that along with so...

EVE is a cool game, but ultimately ends up a waste of time most of the time. Would be better if you could go back to it's first year again too.

Re: Why Do Traditional Rts In The New Millennia Suck?

Yeah, people who slog at WC3 and CNC Generals always appear strange to me, their both pretty decent games seen objectively. Both of them have a very nice polished feel, lacking in many games that truly are shitty, and have some nice unique features. The gameplay works out exactly as it's supposed to...

I think you missed smoths point that he doesn't wanna fuck around with a bunch of obscure .txt config files and auxiliary programs and stuff for 2 hours just so he can set it up to play some game. Same reason linux tends to suck.

Re: Thoughts on the financial crisis - IS THE WORLD ENDING?

In my opinion it's the lenders fault if he didn't make sure he could get his money back, he can suck it. Some of us learn this the hard way in elementary school, others later I guess.

And if you can't afford your house, sell it?
