Re: promote spring engine

This arguement is as old as it is dumb. Do you think players have so bad short-term memory that they see a video of Spring1944, and when they have installed springlobby they have already forgotten the game's name? Im sure they have enough of a memory to make a distinction between a ww2 game and a g...

Re: Whitelists instead of Banlists for hosts

What about the channels? If we encourage conversation in channels, would that help to reduce the impact of that? I know that most newbies tend to pop into channels to say "Hi!" when they get on. Nope, very few newbies join #s44 even though we have "/join #s44" in room name. Most newbies do not conv...

Just imo.

Re: Whitelists instead of Banlists for hosts

The point is to have to do a few minutes of work, so that creating 10 accounts costs you an hour, while it costs the admins only 5 seconds to ban your account. banning might only take 5 seconds, but does not help with a 45 minute long 8v8 being ruined. FPS game admins usually have a revert command ...

Re: Visited to spec a few games from a long time, revolted by the community

Your proposal (achievement/reward based permissions) aims at players. The rules I suggest (at this point they are just examples) are for admins (both lobby-admins and autohost-admins). IMHO they are the problem and solution, as they can and must enforce rules. Without their cooperation the communit...

Re: Whitelists instead of Banlists for hosts

That would not work. Why can't I join this game? What the hell, this game sucks, I'mma go write a bad review. *leaves* A message pops up: "You need more training before you can join this match, consider playing some i vs i matches instead" (lobby substitutes for appropriate numbers for i). Actually...

Re: Whitelists instead of Banlists for hosts

Email verification is a bad idea:
  • as you said, it presents yet another barrier to entry for newbies
  • Obtaining temporary/throwaway email addresses is very easy
However, emails could be made optional for password recovery.

Re: Visited to spec a few games from a long time, revolted by the community

The registration creates a sense of 'accountability'. That is a usual requisite for responsibility (it's not technically necessary, but it works in its favor). If we want admins to be responsible members of the community, we can expect of them to be a) reachable (via email + pm) and b) read the for...

Re: Whitelists instead of Banlists for hosts

@Senna: I disagree. Caring about your privacy/anonimity should not prevent you from playing games. I propose a different technique instead of password locking / whitelisting. Simply require players to have some experience with N-1 vs N-1 mathces in game X before they are allowed into N vs N matches ...

0/10 proprietary software So? It is far better than anything remotely close that is open source and you don't need your own server. Perhaps you should look into NOTAlobby, then? From what I heard it is better than SL in almost every way. Oh and why stop there? I'm sure there is some commercial engi...

You are most likely missing headers for OpenGL. I'd look at some spring compile guide and install the additional packages that might be mentioned there.

Re: [misc] The large db purge on September 2016

If only we required emails on registration so people could be reached in case they still want to keep their account. An invite system had crossed my mind before. It would create a sense of exclusivity among players, possibly increasing their chance of staying. And everyone new would have someone ol...
