Soon on HDDVD

Steven Spielberg is making a sequel to one of history's greatest films.
Does anyone know the exact font for the title? This one doesn't really cut it.

Good C++ does not have void*.
No arguing that :-)

Re: Beginning programming

Don't do that - the C first thing. Too many people learn C first, and then go on to use all the unsafe C features that just set you up for disaster once you get a large, complicated C++ project, when C++ has many features that let you write code that is every bit as safe as Java or C#, but faster a...

Re: Beginning programming

I say: learn Java. It's easier than C++ and more pure OO than C++. Then, if you really want to learn C++, learn C first. If you want to learn about gui programming, Java Swing is one hell of a nifty gui toolkit. I really don't know why some people hate it, all other gui libraries can be horribly inc...

Re: DWARF FORTRESS

thank you ! does it mean that the cancels are something that happens all the time? and that we just dont usually see it? Exactly. Dwarves are extremely lazy and selfish. Don't expect them to do anything without drinking, eating or sleeping too long. Entire fortresses have perished because of entire...

Re: DWARF FORTRESS

my first idea was that there are not enough tables for all dwarfs to eat/drink, so thirsty/hungry dwarfs were waiting for a table to become free and as soon as this happened they canceled the current task to get something to drink. ive expanded my dining room, added more tables and it didnt help. n...

Re: DWARF FORTRESS

You don't have to pump the water up, just make sure there's a shaft from your pond to the well. a well can be as high above a water reservoir as you like (you can even see the bucket travel up and down across the z-levels when a dwarf is using it). When you dig a channel, you basically mine out the ...

Nonsense,
Picasso is the coolest member of these forums.
His posts are like a work of art, and most of the time he's got something useful or interesting to say.

Re: Thoughts on the financial crisis - IS THE WORLD ENDING?

Belgian banks are collapsing.
Our largest bank, Fortis, has dropped 78% in stock value since the start of the crisis. Really weird, Fortis was basically booming just a month ago.

Re: Thoughts on the financial crisis - IS THE WORLD ENDING?

Why would we want to change or counter-act human nature? It is innate to us. The point is to have a socio-cultural system which incorporates our knowledge of human nature into it. As you said, the failing of communism is that it does not take human nature into account. What follows from this is not...

I agree.
Let the empires correspond to the actual sides of the mod. There's no reason why we couldn't have multiple meta games running for multiple mods anyway.

I don't remember the precise procedure to enlarge the view port, but you have to change data/init/init.txt. Quoting from my init file: This is the dimensions in tiles of the display grid. Minimum x is 80. Minimum y is 25. Maximums are 200. Make sure the window size or full screen resolution matches ...

Re: DWARF FORTRESS

Ouch! Next time, put a pressure plate on the bottom of your well reservoir, and make it close the floodgate when you reach 7/7. Also, I made a disturbing discovery. Every creature, dwarf or otherwise, is completely covered in mud, vomit and blood. Some are even covered in ichor, whatever that may be...

Re: Long Term Motivation

Actually, that's not a bad idea, Picasso. When a player conquers a planet, let him choose which mod has to be played to conquer it again. It would be a great tool to promote mods (or games, whatever). New or strangely unpopular mods would have a natural defense bonus, because nobody knows how to dec...

Re: DWARF FORTRESS

Michilus, change the entrance to your fortress (where you have 2 cage traps) into 2 or 3 tiles wide, as it is the dwarves have to climb over each other in 1 tile corridors, making pathfinding harder (lowering your fps) and the dwarves move slower I know, but it's mostly for aesthetic reasons. Dwarv...
