Re: Imperial Winter - where things stand, and how you can help.
Would you please elaborate a realistic scenario when releasing the source code could bring "the game to fall apart"? Maybe with a real world example.linuxboy wrote: I think his goal of releasing an epic star wars game could potentially fall apart if he released the source right now.

Re: Imperial Winter - where things stand, and how you can help.
I've been having a lot of trouble with my graphics card and spring, has anyone tried a few games and seen what happens? The most recent version I have from SVN is playable, the only major thing was a huge lag spike with the custom flag capture command on swarms of units, which I started to solve by...

Re: Imperial Winter - where things stand, and how you can help.
Probably the most valuable part of IW is the art assests, i.e. models, textures, and animations. That is what they are worried about people stealing. So it isn't something you can "just fork" from S44. forking a project is to steal it? there's copyright for that. if he choose a restrictiv...

Re: Imperial Winter - where things stand, and how you can help.
if there were people that would fork iw, then they would just fork s44 and make a star wars game from it just for the sake of say "in your face" to warlord

Re: Imperial Winter - where things stand, and how you can help.
fair enuff' but... "open source" does not mean you can fork the project all you want. It only means the source is open and the GPL clearly states that art assets are not covered by the GPL. I'll not turn this into a GPL argument but you can search the forum if you want to see the reasons ...

Re: Imperial Winter - where things stand, and how you can help.
Whe whole "i'm making an open (?) source project but i'm afraid that people could fork it" it's really hilarious. p.s. i can offer 10$ for a video card for warlord if he subscribe a document where he say that if he accept the video card and 30 days later he have not released the mod (and t...

Re: Imperial Winter - where things stand, and how you can help.
That'd be a little infuriating, getting hold of a broken, unplayable IW that you aren't allowed to alter? i don't get your point. are you worried that iw could be altered in a way you don't like? meh, this is open source man, and you always claimed that imperial winter would have been opensource. i...

Be realistic, you will not finish imperial winter. Just release it, someone else will do the job and your name will ever be in the credits.Warlord Zsinj wrote:I can afford a new computer, part of the reason I haven't got one yet is because I'm still trying to work out how to fit life around proper full time work

as you can se the first two are

1920 x 1080 17.61% +1.28%
with 1920x1080 rapidly growing, so i was not so far from the truth.

Re: spring 0.82.7.1 on Mac OS
Well, abma and me had a game and there were sync problems. Apart from that mac ports springlobby has really a lot of issues and qtlobby doesn't compile. So, in my opinion we're still far to be really playable. Still, this is a giant leap forward. I'm going to try to produce a binary installer or an ...

Re: Multithreading
I'm just describing one of the various common techniques that are used in similar cases, when you have to break backward compatibility but you have a large codebase that could be painful to port to the new system. It may not be feasible in this case, but must i to read the whole spring engine code t...

Re: Multithreading
Double-posting because of a change in topic: Would it be a bad idea to, instead of changing the API fundamentally, expand it with a new set of "MT approved" functions? That way, we could have a system that could handle multithreading effectively without sacrificing backward compatibility,...
